I just watched Mark's review of the Hori Fighting Commander PC controller. It has 6 buttons. How does that work with a system that comes with standard 2 button controllers? Mark was playing Street Fighter 2, and (as far as I know), that game was programmed specifically to be a 2 button game for that system.

Street Fighter games have a 6 -button layout on the arcades. I imagine the port was designed with this in mind in case someone wants to use an arcade stick or a fight pad to play the game while at the same time having the compatibility with the original PC Engine controller.
I'm just guessing here since I never owned a PC Engine, but it makes sense that the arcade ports for the system were very good considering Japan is where the arcade culture has always been the biggest, and the PC Engine was the preffered 16 bit console of the country at the time.

I think it actually used 3 buttons (I,II,Run) and you had to tap select to switch between kicks and punches to get 6 buttons total.

I think Mortal Kombat was like that in the Genesis if you only had the 3 buttons controller, you had to hold one button to activate the other buttons functions. I still can't imagine how people played like that. It's a good thing they at least got blood in those versions.
