Whatever happened to cheat codes? And while I'm at it, whatever happened to Action Replay, Gameshark, & Game Genie?
I dunno about you guys, but I have very fond memories of using cheats & cheat devices in games. IMO games like Goldeneye wouldn't be nearly as classic without all the awesome cheat codes. Can you imagine if the 6th gen GTA games had no cheat codes?
Does anyone else here have fond memories of using cheating devices like Action Replay and Gameshark? Because I sure as hell do! I would spend HOURS fooling around in Mario Sunshine with the moon gravity cheat via my Action Replay disc. And using my Gameshark cart for the N64, I could essentially turn Mario 64 into a bat shit insane madhouse where the laws of physics, time and space don't apply, all thanks to some amazing cheat codes I found on the internet.
So I ask, why has cheating disappeared from modern games? Why, why, WHY?? What's a good game without fun cheat codes?
What do you guys think? Do any of you miss cheat codes, too?

Some are DLC, like that classic Tomb Raider skin announced for Rise Of The Tomb Raider on PS4.
A few games still have them, like the Rockstar games, but the big majority of games won't allow it because it can basically break their game that is barely running as is.

They died in the corporate cleanesing of the sixth generation and became unlockables to stretch the length of the game. After all F-Zero GX wouldn't be such a hard game to 100% if you could just input a code to unlock all racers and tracks and spend the rest of the game dicking around with your friends in multiplayer now would it?

Yes I loved the cheat codes in the older gta games. I had a paper with cheat codes written on it and even had some of the codes memorized. I had an action replay for my ds and messed around with that a lot.

Modern networks with Trophy/Achievements, DLC, and prevalent autosave/checkpoints with network data sync to be more precise actually - These pretty much ensure modern games must be played as intended, and that completing them 100% and unlocking every secret is possible with perseverence and/or money. Any hacking tool would jeapordize the fairness of the playing field, and undermine the effort and monetary investment some gamers would have put into their respective games over those that didn't invest that same time & munny.

Not at all. Games like Red Dead Redemption let you use cheats - it just turns off all of the trophies and the auto-save. Also, level what playing field? Who cares if someone uses cheats to finish their video games?

Why, the field of earning trophies fer increasing yer player profile level of course, dear 16bit. (Why else do you think them trophies are disabled in that specific case... Plats won't be worth the effort if you could cheat your way to them would they... )

They still pop up now and then. I seem to recall Shovel Knight has a code to skip directly to the "Plague of Shadows" content. Though Shovel Knight is intentionally old school.

Now all my friends will think he's better at video games than me - even though he isn't!
