Boy, am I glad cheat codes are mostly gone! They are one of those things from the past that can stay in the past. I'm more than happy to see the options a cheat code would unlock right in front of me or whatever other mechanism the cheat code would trigger just made into something workable around regular game play.

I'm talking about console games, not PC. I also feel the streamlining of achievements/trophies made it difficult for cheats to coexist with them. Oh yeah, I forgot about achievements. This makes a lot of sense now that I'm reminded of that. But still, in a game like GTA 4, when you activated a cheat code, it would instantly disable achievements/trophies. If GTA 4 could do that, I think it could be done in other games, too.

I'm seeing a lot of you guys arguing that they went away because of cheat codes but I really don't think so as I know a couple of games that actually award you achievements for using cheatcodes.

Quite a few brain-dead faggots in this thread, most notably spidershinobi and Guilion. But of course, this is to be expected from anyone who thinks the 6th gen was turning them into unlockables (They didn't; very few games did this) or that their absence is a good thing.
And no, companies don't care about any non-existent, singleplayer playing field; most modern/7th gen games automatically disable achievements when cheat codes are active.
Now, onto the reason as to why they're gone: It's a combination of reasons, but it's mostly because, like with unlockables, their function has been delegated to shit-ass DLC. In addition to that, games have become increasingly more linear over the past 9 years, essentially railroading the player from one glorified strip of geometry to the next, and cheats would discourage that. Third, games have less features and resources than they did in prior generations; you used to have health meters, medkits, magic bars, stamina, armor, lives, etc, so there were lots of things to manipulate to allow for a plethora of cheat codes. Now, we mostly get regenerating health and the same gun but with slightly different stats spread out over different skins, so there's no reason to create cheat codes when the game only really has 2 features. This goes hand-in-hand with the casualization of top-selling genres like FPS, which results in the same lack of reason for not having cheat codes. Finally, game updates make the existence of cheat codes today a wrench in the gearworks, since they have the potential to, for example: Break the renderer should you load in a save file with active cheats after a recent update.
Really, if you want cheat codes and other past gaming hallmarks to come back, only one thing needs to be done: Cut the cord with online console gameplay by having it be, once again, the exception rather than the rule. That is literally the biggest reason as to why things like cheat codes, unlockables, games working on day 1 are shackled. Once the cord is cut, everything will naturally fall back into place.

Be less of a brain-dead faggot, for starters. Unless of course you relish these negative characteristics, which wouldn't be surprising in the slightest.
Still waiting for an actual, substantial rebuttal.

Well you are actually right; the online component is part of it. That goes along with the main reason is achievements/trophies. Most people seem to care about those, and developers see that if cheats were around they would screw them up. So if a game has cheats, those are turned off. Developers just don't want to deal with extra stuff if a majority are going to use it.
