What older games have you discovered recently? What stopped you from playing said game originally?
I just recently downloaded the Wii version of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii U, and the game is amazing. I did not play it upon release in the US, because it was a Game Stop exclusive limited release. When I finally had the cash to buy it, scalpers were selling it from anywhere between $100 to $150 online. Now that the digital release is out at a decent price ($20), I am COMPLETELY enjoying this game. I know the New 3DS re-released the game, but still don't know many people who own it. The game is fantastic.
As for a really old game, I have discovered Keystone Capers on the Atari 2600 in the last few months. My love for games began with the NES, although I had played the 2600 in the mid 80s. I overlooked many Atari 2600 games as a kid, because I considered it "dusty old tech," and I didn't have much interest in it at the time. My son and I seem to play that game weekly now. The game is very simple, but it is a ton of fun.
By the way, I'd like to keep this thread alive to give everyone the chance to discover gems they somehow overlooked.

I've recently gotten into the Fatal Fury games since I've finally gotten around to setting up MAME again. The only Fatal Fury game I played beforehand was Garou: MoTW. It's an interesting series of fighting games with a lot of characters that have some unique movesets. So far my favorite has been Real Bout Special, I might even like that one more that MoTW. Also, I now know where the term "SNK boss syndrome" comes from. Goddamn.

Dragon Quest VII! Initially released on the PS1, I missed it the first time around and just as well because this 3DS port is just fantastic.
If you want to go back older, I've been playing a little Kidd Chameleon on the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and I can now see why Dave from The Game Room was such a big proponent for the game.

Pretty much everything on the Genesis. I used to read magazines from Spain about the console and its games, but I didn't really have the opportunity to play them. I'm happy those games are still available through multiple platforms because now I can enjoy them and catch on what I missed on back in the day.

Mark has been reviewing a lot of Master System games this year that I didn't know about, and some of them look really good. As I bought a 3DS this year, I've been looking for good NDS games to buy. This week, I've come across some gameplay videos of Contra 4, and man, it looks awesome. I don't know why it wasn't on my initial list. Now it is, and I'll buy it next month or so. (As soon as the games I've bought this month get here!) Also, I'm studying japanese (started just a few months ago, so I'm at the veeeeeery beggining of it), so I've got more confidence to start looking for more japanese RPGs/Adventure games for my Saturn, and maybe start playing the ones I already have. One that interests me a lot is Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari, an SNK adventure game that looks really beautiful, probably the best looking 2d one on the Saturn along with Princess Crown (which I already played using a translation I found online). I haven't bought it yet, just saw some gameplay videos to see how it looks, but will do soon enough.

One awesome thing about learning Japanese and owning a 3DS is that the DS games are region free and Japanese ones can be incredibly cheap to collect on Ebay. I've taught myself hiragana and katakana years ago and just recently, I started slowly engaging with kanji. Not an easy task but it's a long term goal I hope to achieve. I know there's a Konami arcade compilation on the DS that has Contra on it; in general, the DS is full of sleeper titles.

Not a very old game, it's from 2004, but it's the oldest I've discovered in a while that I didn't already know about, I literally just a week ago saw it for the first time ever in a YouTube video 7 days ago today. Anyway, the game is Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge on the Game Boy Advance, and as I've been catsitting for my aunt who's been out of town for a few days, I had plenty of time to play something portable while I was over there keeping her cats company and such. Initially I played it on my PSP using GBA emulation while the actual game was still on the way, seeing as it was just the kind of game I look for I didn't waste time and ordered it right away, alongside a handful other games while i was at it. I managed to get a new and still factory sealed copy for very cheap so it was a no brainer despite the short time between discovery and placing the order. After I got the game I played through the rest of it on my standard GBA. The game itself is quite good, at least for what it is; a 3D flat-shaded polygonal racing game with fully texture-mapped polygonal Hot Wheels cars. It features a simple trick system, some over-the-top track designs based loosely on Hot Wheels toy tracks with loops and big set-pieces like dinosaurs, giant spiders, space stations, tiki-heads and volcanoes and such, it also features on-road pickups much like kart racing games do, though with Hot Wheels brand cars instead of cartoony characters in gokarts, and a few different modes of play including a very basic "multiplayer" mode where you and presumably someone else take turns as player 1 and then player 2, so sadly no link-cable support in this one. I've written a full in-detail review of it in the "Rate the last game you finished"-thread, linked to here.
