So I watched the youtube trailer for the new Pikmin game for 3DS about a week ago and....wow, it totally wasn't what I was expecting. It doesn't look like a 3DS game, it looks like a mobile game. I remember not liking the visual style (backgrounds were kinda nice), but mainly what I can't get over is why it is in 2D? When the 3DS launched, I was legitimately expecting it to be Nintendo's first handheld for true 3D games (as in, ACTUAL POLYGONS, not just the gimmicky "3D" effect). The remakes of Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time were an awesome showcase of what the handheld was capable of. So why haven't they given all their 3DS releases the benefit of polygons? Who out there even asked for a 2D Pikmin game??
Look, I have absolutely nothing against 2D graphics (and, on that note, 2D gaming), IF they are done well. But this new Pikmin game looks like a budget title, and as a Pikmin fan I expected more from the new game, even given the fact that it's a handheld title with a smaller budget. I'm left feeling sort of cold by the trailer for this game... So, what do you guys think of it? Are there any Pikmin fans here who were left just as confused as I was, as to why Nintendo made the decision to make a 2D Pikmin game? |

Seeing it reminded me a lot of a cross between Pikmin, and something like Lemmings, which seems like a pretty natural fit. I think I'll likely pick this one up.

It seems neat, but I find it amusing just how pase 2d sidescrollers have become. Back when the original New Super Mario Bros. came out, people bought it in droves due to their nostalgia. "Retro" has become more prevalent in modern gaming than actual contemporary games are.
I actually think Nintendo has released more 2d games than 3d ones in the past year or so.

They're generally cheaper to make, which is especially apparent in the new Pikmin game. I imagine a portable 3D Pikmin would take a lot more effort. I just hope this won't be the last Pikmin game we're going to get. |

I think calling it comparable to a mobile game is a wee bit harsh. It reminds me of a Mario vs. Donkey Kong kind of deal which I think is pretty creative. I'll be totally honest, I played the first Pikmin twice and it never clicked with me. The streamlined nature of this new release seems a bit more up my alley.
The real question is whether this is the supposed Pikmin 4 that has been underway for over a year now. It'd be pretty tough to believe that but Nintendo has always been something of a wild card so I'd like to know what's in store for 2017 Nintendo.
On a side note, if you're not particularly enthralled by this Pikmini game, you must be delighted to know Yoshi Wooly World is coming to 3DS.

teddykongcountry YOSHI'S WOOLY WORLD IS COMING TO 3DS??!??!!? Awesome! Thank you for informing me, as I had no idea. In response to the first part of your comment, I did probably come across as being too harsh. I was mostly criticizing the graphics rather than the gameplay itself. In regards to the gameplay, it doesn't seem bad, it's just not what I wanted.

I knew that would excite you  Yeah, the pixels aren't spectacular, somewhat reminiscent of the DS generation. All the same, that's a generation I happen to like and I tend to appreciate deformed pixels moreso than the more Pixar-oriented approach other series have headed towards. |

Yeah, it does excite me! All I hope is that the graphics (of Wooly World) don't get downgraded too much, because that's the main reason I'm interested in it. I mean, gameplay is very important too, but in this case it's the graphics that matter most to me.
