So my replacement computer is on its way, and I'm gonna start playing Oblivion. I have found a ton of really awesome mods that I would love to install. But it's been ages since I have attempted to download+install mods, and "attempted" is an app verb because my efforts were unsuccessful. I was really young at the time and had a very poor idea of what I was doing (and on top of that, I've never been good with software).
Does anyone here have experience in installing mods? Is it a process that involves a lot of steps? I remember WinRAR as being an integral ingredient for the process (it is needed to extract files I think?), but that's about it. I've heard that some games are more mod-friendly than others. I really wish I knew more about this...

It heavily depends on the game itself. For mod friendly games, intalling a mod usually just means copying the mods contents to a folder called "mods" or something inside the main game's folder; then, usually, when you start the game, you have the option of either playing the main game or the installed mods (as I remember, The Witcher works like this). This is the more common situation. For a few other games, it might mean replacing some files or even editing configuration files.
I haven't messed with mods for a long time - my backlog is so huge nowadays that I barely have time to play the main games... But for some games like the Bethesda ones (FallOut, Elder Scrolls), it's way more fun to play with mods than even playing the main game. I remember playing with a lot of mods in Skyrim, Half-Life 2 and Max Payne; those were my most modded games. Some really good modders create entirely new games out of these mods, and these games may be really special (I particularly remember the Minerva mod for HL2 and Katana mod for the first Max Payne). You should remember that even Counter Strike started as a mod.
So, it's worth trying them, at least after you're done with the main game. The process is different for each game, but never too hard: just googling "install mods game X" is enough to learn about it.

Cervantes Thank you for your feedback! I actually just found a "how to" page specifically dedicated to installing mods for Oblivion the other day. This one: wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/How_to_install_Oblivion_modsI know that some games are developed with modding in mind like you said (like the Elder Scrolls games), but others like Halo CE require special programs in order to install & run mods, or so I've heard. Honestly the only game I really feel the need to mod is Oblivion. The other PC games that I own (Jedi Knight II and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds Saga) are fine the way they were shipped, at least for me anyway.
