As for myself, I don't see a problem in anyone doing a fun physical activity sometimes and even engaging in small, inconsequential competitions. But professional sports are just stupid beyond comprehension, and eSports are even worse. My opinion on professional teams and big events (Olympics, World Cup, Super Bowl) is pretty much what Armored Core Raven said. I can't wrap my head around the fact we, as a society, agree to pay a fortune for someone to throw a ball. In the same sense, it's fun to play competitive video games, but making a huge event around it and turn it into a profession is just... Man, I really can't comprehend it. It's giving too much money just to see people brag about themselves. Indeed, and the kind of worshipment these people get from simpletons is creepy to say the least.

Most people would not agree that chess is a sport. Not even close. People here in Norway are very interested in Chess after we won the World Championship. I don't give a shit, but it is certainly a sport. Being popular in Norway is not the criteria used for deeming something a sport, Balder . Sport: Noun(1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in

are you denying the physical and mental benefits of actual sports? Yes, of course I do, I have no other option as I hate false information. Sports are by and for complete idiots who enjoy watching adults do things toddlers do better, like putting things in holes, toddlers usually have to fit the correct shape into a correct hole, somewhat challenging for a toddler, but the adults who participate in sports usually have to put a tiny ball into extremely oversized holes, something any toddler would find offensively simple and stupid, so those adults are literally below toddlers in intelligence. Then there are the fans, literally the least intelligent beings in the universe, who actually look up to those morons. The participants of sports are also at a dramatically higher risk for injuries and overstraining themselves just training for their stupid waste of time than any other type of person in relation to how important the thing they do is (for example: being a firefighter is high risk but they actually do important work) and the fans are in vast majority morbidly obese super duper retards who absolutely do NOT get any health benefits sitting down in front of their TVs for hours repeatedly shouting profanities at all the dumbasses running around like headless chickens on the grass kicking balls into large square holes as a living or other such mentally degrading crap. Armored Core Raven has clearly never been on a team, or played a sport, or done anything physical ever.

I, as everyone else, was sadly forced to go to "be an idiot like everybody else or we'll punish you"-camp (aka school), so I was forced to participate in these physical activities growing up, I was rarely on he losing team as I was always in relatively good shape and found the activities fairly easy, but I absolutely hated the "team" and "win/lose" aspects of it all. It was one thing doing the different activities where you tested your own abilities where I could approach it a bit more scientifically and keep track of what a human body could do and what the reactions were etc., I found that enjoyable enough to get through certain types of gym classes, but as a sport where I was competing with others who had different physical strengths and weaknesses to my own making the entire thing unfair for literally everyone? That shit made just as much sense and was just as fun and meaningful as any of the countless "chase the ball or equivalent thingy around for an hour or so so the teachers don't have to do their job and have us actually learn anything because they themselves don't know shit as they were raised on this crap as well"-sports.

I understand your points and frustrations, but that doesn't mean that sports don't have mental or physical benefits, as fsfsxii said. We can't all just become firefighters to stay fit.

Sport
And poeple enjoy the thrill of other people seeing things they can't do.
I know the feeling. I don't watch sports unless it's a team that represents where I live. Football's all good but stuff like swimming and cricket...boring!
But sport is something you're better off playing that watching. It's in human natures to compete, and sport it's a good outlet for that. Same with board, card and computer games. But sport is for people who find running on the treadmill a little boring.
This is hardcore:
So is this:

I'm with Balder, and also with Armored Core Raven on this. Top fighting games competitors that actually travel around the world and average a half of a million dollars in earnings between tournaments and sponsorships, are athletes in my opinion. We can all play basketball and football with our friends, but we know that doesn't makes us LeBron James or Cristiano Ronaldo. I admire people like Tokido, Fuudo, Daigo, and Infiltration who train 8 to 10 hours a day then scout players for another 2 hours or so. That doesn't sound absurd to some because maybe there are people that have a lot of free time and would play that many hours. However they don't play the exact same game for an entire year, planning every single possible situation that could present in a fight, figuring out how to approach those situations, perfecting how to perform those moves, repeating over and over again in a confined room motions and reactions until they become second nature, memorizing frame data that fits in books as big as dictionaries, and utilizing that knowledge strategically as if they were elaborating rehearsed plays just like a NFL team does, not to mention mentally preparing for the mental wear of tournaments. I also agree that sports in general are absurd, just like life itself and everything in between. We as humans are the ones who give meaning and significance to anything we strive for and care about.

Just because it is on ESPN doesn't mean anything.

ESPN definitely doesn't cover all sports. It did cover Street Fighter V this last Evo, but it doesn't cover things like sex which is definitely a sport.
It is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual tries to reach a goal for entertainment purposes. It also involves timing, pacing, precison, consistency, practice, etc., in order to get better.
You can also argue that there is large field to compete with, which leads to couples getting distant, dissolved, or separated. It is also one of the most watched sports on the planet, with the biggest fanbase.
Have you guys seen the movie 8 Mile? I had never been big into rap but that's a sport to me, driving bikes, driving a car, even political debates, can all reach sports levels for certain participants.
Anything that involves practice, training, planning, and competition is a sport. Which is why I feel there is nothing wrong with considering math competitions a sport, as the mind is like another muscle you can exercise and make better.
