I hate the cheesy costume design and choppiness of the gameplay. In a way I can understand that point, but it is one of those things that are so ingrained in my mind that even when I try I still can't see them. When I see hoody Monks or Tibet priests I always relate them to Mortal Kombat. Plus ninjas are some of those things that are cool to me no matter what. Also characters like Raiden, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, have all some kind of archetype built into them that is always fascinating. I do agree that there is a level of cheesiness, not just in Mortal Kombat, but in fighting games in general. Street Fighter V story mode is so cheesy, but that's what makes it good to me. The conversations in KOF are beyond cheesy as well, and yet I really love that.

Resident Evil 4 is a genre creating game, made even better with games like Vanquish and The Evil Within. Shinji Mikami is a genius!

Resident Evil 4 is a genre creating gameInteresting. Why do you say that, may I ask? I mean there were 3rd person shooters before RE 4.

MeleeMonk - I guess fsfsxii is referring to the over-the-shoulder kind of third person shooters. Since they came with not only a camera angle but also specific control methods and associated tropes (like the use of QTEs), I guess RE4 could be seen as the start of a new subgenre, although it's only half of it - the other half was popularized (though not invented) by the Gears of War method of using cover. There's a reason why the subgenre is often referred to as cover based shooter. So yeah, Resident Evil 4 + Gears = Cover based shooter subgenre. I can see that.

I was playing 1943 Battle Of Midway on my Capcom Arcade Cabinet, and towards the far levels you start seeing a lot of bullethell also known as bulletheaven gameplay dynamics, however that specific subgenre of shoot 'em ups didn't really took off until DoDonPachi was dropped and stablished most of the characteristics we see today in the games of that subgenre. DonPachi had that going on as well, but DoDonPachi was the one actually influential. I can't believe I forgot about naming that one.

fsfsxii Do you agree with Cervantes' post? Do you?! He's right, but because i never played gears, i can only associate the subgenre's conception with RE4 and Killswitch by namco. To this day, i still think the genre is dominated by Mikami, as evident with Vanquish and The Evil Within, the modern interpretation of his creation.
