Wow, these Neo-Geo games looks so fun, but too expensive... Awesome pick stratogustav . This art style reminds me of the downloadable games offered today. They were so far ahead of their time, it is ridiculous. I really wish there was a way to play these games cheaply. I know the anthologies exist, but I want to play them all! It is too bad the Neo Geo X Gold was universally hated. I actually wanted one...

It's only for collectors sadly. I would love to play Castlevania or TMNT the Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis, but they are way overpriced. It's yet another reason to stick with Atari; timeless classics that you don't have to take out a mortgage to get.

The first Metal Slug that I ever owned was Metal Slug X. The PS1 version that is. I played Metal Slug on the arcades many times before, but Metal Slug X was my first home console experience with the series.
Metal Slug X is probably one of my most played games of all time, and it happens to be the update ultimate kind of version to the awesome Metal Slug 2 Mark is reviewing here.
There is a general consensus that the series just got better with each sequel all the way to Metal Slug 3 at least. For me personally it is weird, but my favorite one is the first one.
Don't get me wrong, I love all of them, including 4 and 5, and according to how much I have played them all, Metal Slug X should in theory be my favorite. However what happens is that I like simplicity, and the first one is just Marco, no transformations. The transformations of later games are the ones I did not enjoy that much.
The game is called Metal Slug, but you only ride those once in a while, I would had loved if they would had released a full title were you only play inside the actual Metal Slug during the whole game in the same Universe, but it never happened.
The comparisons with Contra are expected as both games are pretty much the same run and gun shoot 'em up 2D sidescrolling adventure puzzle platformer kind of genre, but after you play them, you can tell right away they are uniquely different and offer very different elements of gameplay, which is why is normal to love both series.

I have spent an enormous amount of time playing Metal Slug 1-3 (especially X and 3) and I used to be obsessed with the series, but for good reason; it's an outstanding series. Metal Slug 2 is a great games that improves upon the original in all the ways that matter, so therefore I agree 100% with Mark. I do recommend X over 2 because of its improved performance (2 wasn't very well optimized and had framerate issues) and abundance of added bonuses and other stuff. One thing that really makes Metal Slug 2 for the Neo Geo CD stand out is that it comes with an art gallery, something that the MS anthology tragically does not have. It seems to be the best version of Metal Slug 2, lengthy loading times aside.
