What the hell is the point in having a large collection of video games, when most of it is just shovelware? For those that have the cash to buy full system collections, shovelware doesn't exist. In those cases I approve.

Balder I think what he's trying to say is if they have money to burn, then quality isn't too big a deal as they'll buy anything, because they can. Right, stratogustav ?

I get it, but my question then: who are these people? Because people who go for these collections always put quality aside for quantity.

To be fair, it's sometimes fun to have some very special terrible games. Right now I'm thinking again about looking for a copy of Virtual Hydlide for my Saturn, in the same way that most Atari 2600 owners are usually at least curious enough to try ET, or some people would love to have the CDi Zelda games. I don't know what is it, but it's just fun to look what a massive trainwreck looks like personally. Outside these famously terrible games, I do agree that there's little sense in buying shovelware, though, and I always look only for games I would enjoy playing.

Some people do legitimately own all released games for a single system, all of them. In those cases, a single game missing is a problem, even if it is only shovelware.

There was also a guest once who had a complete Wii collection. Every single Wii game! Crazy. You couldn't pay me enough to keep that in my house, but if it makes him happy, good for him.

Buying extremely terrible games can be interesting, but it's not those games I'm talking about. Things like sports titles that comes out every year and cheap knock offs are never going to be played and laughed at for being bad. They're just boring.

Balder - Interestingly, I think I've never bought myself any of those annual sports titles - the ones I have were all gifts. I also don't get why someone would feel the need to buy every single FIFA/NFL release, since they're all pretty much the same. I forgot to say that I'll occasionally buy a boring/bad game if it's in a series I like just to have the entire series (though I'll still try to play it, so it seems I'll always buy something to play it). That's why I have The Witcher 1, which actually surprised me and was much more fun than what I expected, and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, which was just shit, but at least was the trainwreck kind of shit. One situation in which is common for someone to get games and not intend to play them: bundles. Those humble bundles usually have one or two interesting games, and then some that will sit forever being unplayed. I still try to play every game in the bundle anyway, especially the shorter ones, but lately I have been refraining myself from buying bundles just to not have a lot of useless games in my backlog. My current backlog is practically only made of games I think I'll enjoy, so I want to keep it that way! Besides the occasional legendarily terrible game, of course.
