Now before you go on to answer this question let me clarify: All of us buys video games to play them, but do you sometimes buy them just to collect them?
Personally I only buy them if I have intentions of playing them. Of course it's hard to get to them all, but at some point I will have played them all.

I just look at them. Playing them lowers their value and ruins the experience.

A little bit of both. I bought Sega Saturn and Dreamcast games only because I didn't have any luck emulating them at the time. That said, I would usually go out of my way to get games in the case with the manual.

I mostly buy to play, some I only buy because they're cheap and I see it as the same thing as buying cheap empty replacement cases that just happen to not be empty, I don't know if I'll ever try them all out, like a bunch of football games, pretty much all the FIFA games since 2006 can be found for less than a bubblegum each, so I have some of those, I've also bought cheap DS games specifically for their cases to use for some of my GBA cartridges that were sold without box or manual, as the DS cases have holders for both DS and GBA cartridges I use the DS cases for those GBA games instead.
Only in some specific cases have I bought for "collection" purposes, like Driver San Francisco Collector's Edition on PC with the figure of the car, I wanted that for the figure only as I don't play modern PC games at all, but that's the only example I can think of where I've done that.

I would say both. Despite a language barrier I'd love to collect famicom games if they're still cheap enough, just to have the colored cartridges and manuals and boxes. Look at this guy's collection freaking adorable. Wouldn't want to actually play most of them, but, freaking adorable. And some things are better emulated or ported to better consoles (but not always)

It's hard to say. My intention is to play them all. I'm not big on hunting trophies unless I really want to for a particular game, I'm satisfied just getting to the ending credits for the most part. The problem is that independently how playing them all is my real intention, often times I find myself not playing them.
When I think about it I do get a lot of value from arcade games as those are the ones I play the most. The problem is that those games not having a clear ending don't give you the sense of "finishing them" for the most part, so trophies is the closest thing to get that feeling for those games.
Games that have clear paths are those story based like Uncharted and the like, and it is always hard for me just to get the ending credits, my attention spam is very limited for those kind of games and yet I end up buying them when I see them cheap because I know I try them eventually here and there.
If there are games that I buy for collective purpose are those as those are the ones I give the less amount of time, and the only ones that make me hesitate from time to time if it was worth it to buy them in the first place even if it was for cheap.

I always have the intention to play the games I buy. However, sometimes my decision to buy a particular game is driven by my collection habits. To give you an example, I've bought a few japanese RPGs for my Saturn, even though it'll take a few years before I'm proficient enough in japanese to actually play them: so, while I intend to play them in the future, I bought them mostly because I was interested in having some of the most relevant games in the Saturn library (Dragon Force 2, Grandia, Wachen Roder etc.). The same goes for my DS/3DS collection: I've bought some "defining games/hidden gems" for it, even though I don't have enough time to play through all of them right now - I wanted to have them already for my collection, but I'll certainly play them down the line.
I'm also thinking of buying myself a NES (my old one broke some years ago) and some games I don't have, even though I could just emulate them. So, while I do intend to play them after buying, the reason why I'm buying instead of emulating is for collection purposes.
TL;DR: I intend to play everything, but I also want a nice collection.

I've done that for the wiiu, i got Bayonetta 2 before i bought a wiiu. bought a wiiu, had it for 2 months, sold it, and i still have bayonetta 2.

I buy them to play them, expect on that rare occasion when I find a rare title for a bargain at my local game store.

I've started this topic because I have a friend who mostly buy video games to collect them and not play them. What the hell is the point in having a large collection of video games, when most of it is just shovelware? Quality >> Quantity

There's plenty of games that I've bought that I have no intention on playing in the near future but will probably play them eventually. Usually it's a matter of get them while you can, I don't want to be searching for PS2 games when they hit PS1 prices.

Sometimes, I will buy games that I know are rare if I find them at cheap prices, like Jurassic Park, Operation Genesis, Shadow Hearts and Okami, all for the PS2.
