I just played and beat A Link to the Past. I've said this before, so I won't beat a dead horse, but I can't believe how much I remember after all of these years. I got all of the heart pieces except one, and I refuse to use an online guide after all these years! I absolutely love that masterpiece of a game.
My son sarcastically told me to beat Super Mario World in one setting, since he watched me beat Zelda. He is currently working on it on my old Super Nintendo, and he doesn't know about any of the secrets. I took him on and took Star Road to the finish line in ~10 minutes. Boy was he annoyed. I know one day my son will be better at me at everything, but that day has not come yet! Mwa ha ha ha haaaaaaa!

Hah, glad to hear you're having such good times with your son, there dschult3. I'm the same way with A Link to the Past and a few other games. I haven't played Final Fantasy 6 in a few years, because any time I feel like it, I can pretty much just close my eyes for a replay It was really cool to play A Link Between Worlds the first time for the same reason. If you know A Link to the Past really well, it is fun to see what secrets are in the same place, or which ones have fun new twists. It was still fun on my recent replay, but when I picked it up when it first came out, that was a fine nostalgia wave.

@imperial Khador -- congrats man! Dragon Quest is always a major undertaking, regardless how rewarding it is. I messed up by starting V too soon after completing IV and burned out 20 hours in. When I upgrade the size of my DS, I'm giving it another go. V has arguably the best narrative elements. dschult3 -- thanks for the compliments! Would like to do more content in that vein if only there was enough time. It's mostly a summer project for the time being doing video essays; for now, it's video podcasts all the way! Furnishing the new apartment will help with all undertakings as well

I just beat Final Fantasy VIII on the Switch. The 3X speed really sped up the process. I remember playing this on my PC in the early 2000s, and I knew it would take me about a month's worth of time to play through it. It was nice to see the touch ups on the graphics, and I still love the music and the story. I found myself being meaner to Rinoa at first, because I used to always go along with her antics 20 years ago, for fear of not getting a good ending. Nothing changes, from what I could see this time around. I absolutely loved hearing those experimental tracks during the Ultimacia fight at the end too. That music always psyches me up. Oh, and during this play through, I spotted a HUGE hole in the "Squall is dead" theory. For those of you who don't know, there is a very intriguing theory that has been around for quite some time that states that Squall died in space, so Rinoa became the bitter sorceress in the future. She became cold and calculating out of the selfish desire to use time compression magic to bring back Squall. I've seen other creepy pastas state that she used the time compression magic to give Squall the possible future vision in the last moments of life in space. I've always loved the dark tone of that theory, but I read it long past the point I had played through the game, so I took it as a great theory, even though Squaresoft (at the time, not Square Enix) denied it. Well, during this play through, I was saddened to see the theory get killed before my eyes during the assassination attempt scene. While controlling Edea, she tries to kill Rinoa as a sacrifice. That would kill her future self, so... yeah. The creepy pasta is dead in my eyes. Anyways, I still love the game. I understand why Final Fantasy VII is getting an HD AND game play makeover, though. As a CGR type guy, I was mad when I originally heard about the changes. In my mind, the games are a piece of history, and they shouldn't be messed with. Playing through this edition 20 years from the launch has COMPLETELY changed my mind. The nuances of the late 90s era of gaming on the PS 1 just pissed me off, since I'm a semi-modern gamer. The pre-rendered backgrounds with the sprite overlays were cool back then, but the odd perspective changes from screen to screen annoyed the hell out of me. It was not uncommon for me to leave one screen to go to another with a changed perspective, and the damn directions changed because of the lay out. I was so angry at the fact that I would often times go back or move to another screen, because it messed up the flow of the game. At other times, I couldn't figure out where I had to be placed perfectly to touch a button, hit a switch, or go up and down a ladder. It would be nice to see the FF 7 treatment applied to 8, but somehow, I doubt it will happen any time soon. Anyways, I love this game, but I won't rate it. My rosy colored nostalgia glasses would over rate the game for 2019. The PS 1 era issues would completely turn of a kid these days, unless they are really into old school RPGs. My son was semi interested, but the lack of voice acting and the complicated GF junction system (which is not that important to understand completely) had him more interested in his other games (and his Sega Genesis Mini). On a side note, I really wish Square Enix would do an MMO with this world. Using SeeD as a merc group, while exploring more of Laguana's story, NorG's story, the history of the Sorceresses, and the Shumi would be awesome.

I really liked FF8. It took the futuristic aspects of FF7 and developed from there. The visuals were amazing for its time and characters were cool as f..k. Squal still looks bad ass.

I just completed Astral Chain. I have mixed feelings about this, because it was a slow crawl for me, at first. stratogustav gave me a pep talk in the Nintendo forum, so I ended up sticking with the game. I hated it, at first, because it felt like a button masher. The first two files (chapters) don't really give you much to go on, even though they have a training room that really gets you ready for the game. Eventually, I really started to love the game by file 5.
I absolutely loved the art style of this game. It looks fantastic on the Switch, and it never slows down in docked mode or hand held mode. The artists were fantastic, and the futuristic setting they created definitely reminded me of Blade Runner mixed with Tron. It is really cool.
The music is great, but not the best I've ever heard. There are some tunes that really stick out to me (especially the end boss), yet some were unmemorable.
The combat, when it picks up with the addition of other Legatus', is awesome. You just have to wait a bit to get what you desire. There are so many different fighting techniques you can pick up on, it is ridiculous. The more moves you learn, the more fun it gets. You'll find that you can defeat enemies in a myriad of ways. If someone says the fighting is laborious, then they were either like me, early into the game, or they are lazily fighting later on in the game.
The story line is a big "meh" to say the least. The "twist" could be seen a mile away, as you could obviously tell that one character has a god complex. You know what will happen. The dynamic between the twins is pretty good, though. Most of the tertiary characters are easily forgotten. Oddly enough, you do become rather attached to the Legatus. I just wish there was more exploration into a lot of the story. It could have been epic; however, I think the combat and the main plot was more important to the directors of the game. It is a shame, really.
Game play is a mixed bag. I loved the exploration and puzzle solving of the game. The Irus reminds me of the Bat Computer used in the Arkham games. You have god like knowledge in certain areas, and it really makes fighting or sneaking around fun. I HATED the platforming. You will have to execute a move where you have to use your Legatus to float over to another platform, and then use the Legatus to pull on the chain to pull you over. You do have a marker beneath them to show you where you are going, but it isn't enough. YOU WILL FALL A LOT. It is so damn annoying. I don't want to drop spoilers here, but the main enemy at the end of the game grows massive, and you have to use this move quite a bit. Sometimes, it can be fun to use it to explore from broken balconies in skyscrapers and high rises. I see what they were going for, but it really can drive you crazy.
It is hard for me to grade this one. I really love the game now. It has its shortcomings though. I have been replaying levels to explore more and achieve more. I also like playing at a more difficult level. I'd give this one a 9/10, due to the "meh" story line. However, the platforming pissed me off enough to drop it down to 8.5/10. The platforming isn't terrible throughout the game to make you quit, but when it is bad, it sucks. The rest of the game is a hell of a lot of fun. Thanks for the pep talk, stratogustav. I might have missed out on a fun experience.

dschult3 hearing that makes me happy. It is really rewarding when you finish a Platinum game. They are always memorable, and have a lot to offer. I'm glad you were able to see this game all the way through, and not feel like you wasted your money. A lot of games get overlooked for giving up too early. I am guilty of this, and it is not a good feeling, specially when you already spend your money on it. So it is nice you were able to enjoy it in the end. It has happened to me too, and it is a good feeling.

I just finished up playing through Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) on the Collection of Mana on the Switcch. Overall, I really enjoyed it, though I wish they'd taken the time to improve a few things. The full-screen menus still load very slowly, though the ring-menus are still quite quick. The boss fights are not exactly difficult, but very, very time consuming, as though the design staff had decided to make the bosses harder than in Secret of Mana, but could only think of increasing their hit points by 5-10 times. As a result, I found myself getting fairly bored during boss battles. I played the Duran/Angela path, with Charlotte as my third character. I think I'll hold off until the remake to play the other paths. This was a bit of a sad one for me. I've been playing it slowly since November, and my father passed away unexpectedly in December. It kind of killed my enthusiasm to do just about anything for a while, but it felt nice finishing off the game now that things are starting to get back to normal for me. Next up, Fire Emblem: Three Houses again, now that the DLC is out

Oh, I also finished the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo the other day.
I really enjoyed it. I don't know that I'll buy the full remake right at launch, but it did give me the urge to play Crisis Core.

Finished up the 20th anniversary edition of Final Fantasy 1 for the PSP (played on my Vita and PSTV). Probably the prettiest way to play FF1.
I really enjoyed it. FF1 is a bare bones RPG, but it had all the elements that really captured my imagination as a kid. I didn't bother with any of the bonus dungeons available in this one.

Finished up the demo for Bravely Default II
Odd naming choice aside (since there's already been a 'Bravely Second'), I really enjoyed this one and sunk about 3 hours into it. I'll be looking forward to the full game.

Finished up the Trials of Mana demo.
I played and enjoyed the original in the Mana Collection recently, and was looking forward to this. Overall, I'm really happy with what I've see/played.
The interface is vastly improved (as it should be in 20+ years), but I think they also translated the locations very well to the 3D space. Combat feels peppy, which is an improvement over the original. It feels a bit odd to play a Mana game where you can jump, but it works.
The game is bright, and cherry, fitting the series, and the updated music works really well. I'm really looking forward to the full game.

Finished up both Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) and Dragon Quest V (DS) in the last few days.
Really enjoyed both, but not much to add beyond what I mentioned in the "What are you all playing?" thread when I was part-way through, so just re-posting that here.
"DQV continues my quest to play 1-2 of those every year, to catch up to my friend who is a giant Dragon Quest/Warrior fan since childhood. I'm finding this one really fun, as it takes place over course of the main character's life. Dragon Quest 4-6, I'm told, is where they started messing with the formula a bit. DQ4 featured every party member getting their own chapter. DQ5 features a tale told across three time periods with the same character (child, adult, and father with kids who can join the party), and also introduces monsters as party members, which eventually spun off into the Dragon Quest Monsters sub-series.
Horizon has been a lot of fun, with an interesting post-machine-apocalypse future. Sadly, I've found the combat and stealth really tedious though, so I ended up cranking down the difficulty to just enjoy the exploration and story aspects."
I will add that I really enjoyed HZD's story right to the end, and hope that it will get a sequel one of these days, as there is a lot of that world left to explore.
Next up, I think I'll start "The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd" on Steam. A cumbersome title, but I really enjoyed the first two.

Final Fantasy II (PSP version) played on the Vita and PSTV
I'm glad I finally played through this, but I am happy to be done with it. It was nice to the origin of some long-running series elements (Dragoons, Cid, Chocobos, etc), and it was nice to have some named characters with more of a backstory after playing FF1. However, the game grindy as all heck, and it is easy to see why the series hadn't returned to that system for stat increases.
