As many of you know, Atari sports some of the best box art in the business and when I saw the compilations for modern consoles floating around store shelves, they proved a sight for eyes sore from the drab murk plaguing modern game cases. As shown, this cover art provides an adequate example of what makes the era frequently thought of as restricted by technical limitations as vibrant and inviting which is a brilliant marketing tactic that modern companies seem to have lost touch with. While there's a lot to like on the cover, it's a no-brainer that Centipede steals the show in front and center. What are some box arts from the Atari era that resonate strongly with you? P.S. My friend Alex and I are going to have our review of the compilation posted on his channel sometime this week so stay tuned for that!

Super Break Out was pretty damn cool to me as a kid. I was obsessed with the Space Shuttle, so I dug this one: You can't go wrong with Pitfall! either. Night Driver was an excellent box for one reason only: It fooled me into thinking the game was good. That game was ass.

Now, if you are going for something more modern, I always loved Todd's Adventure in Slimeworld for the Lynx.

centipede is always stealing the show For that PS4 cover they used the arcade cab artwork. The differences in home box art and cabs is striking, mostly because (I assume) for arcades they wanted it to stand out in a dimly lit room and attract kids. Milipede is probably my favorite, it looks like it was designed by Alphonse Mucha himself. For home console box art they wanted that 70s/80s illustrative style they used for novels and those huge honkin VHS/Beta covers, which worked a little too well and resulted in a lot of pissed off kids and parents feeling duped. Then Nintendo made somewhat accurate depictions of the pixels on their NES covers and it sold like crazy. Then 2 years later we got Fabio on the cover of Ironsword.

It is. It is remarkable what artists did with artwork considering the games lacked graphical depth.

That Atari ad is just mean. "Stevie likes to play alone, even if he has no idea what's happening." What the hell, marketing department?
