Does anyone here have a Raspberry Pi? What do we think about this type of emulation? I don't know if collecting older systems is wise for my family, (It costs too much, it takes up too much room, and I don't have the cash.) and I think this is a great way to try out the rare systems and games out there. I understand both sides of the emulation argument, so I have never entered this market. However, this looks rather tempting. What do you guys think?

The title of that video unleashed a flurry of gamster81 jokes that I won't bother writing, assuming you or anyone else here is a fan.

Gamester81 aside, I've heard good things about the Raspberry Pi and I've seen it used in really interesting ways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think spidershinobi has one? I remember him bringing it up in an older thread.

It is quite popular. It never called my attention, but I end up in many YouTube videos about it while searching how to obtain arcade cabinets for home use. It looks cool though. I feel the biggest selling point is the size. That's exactly what I am looking for in a PC, but the problem is that, I want an all round PC that also does gaming. I still haven't found one that can do well all the way to Taito Type X2 games, and that is also not big. They are all big still. I guess our tech is just not good enough yet.

His actions over the Retro Jaguar Chameleon SNES in a shell were rather off putting, but he has since apologized. You won't be hurting my feelings if you tell some jokes. However, I'm more or less interested in the Raspberry Pi. I think my kids would love something like this.

His actions over the Retro Jaguar Chameleon SNES in a shell were rather off putting, but he has since apologized. "This is the BEST retro emulation kit. For real this time!" I'm glad he did some research and picked something that has working components in it. We miss out on those collectible golden Atari Jaguar shells, but everything's a trade-off, I suppose. I wonder if the Pi will use cartridges? Preferably without updates. It's important that I really feel the limitations of 20 year old tech standards. These are the selling points I'm looking for. Anyone want to add to this?

What is the thing that Metal Jesus made an arcade cabinet with? I want to say it's an older PC. He's got Launchbox for a front end if I recall, and he probably had a few old PC parts laying around. Right now you can emulate a few more systems than a Pi and you can set up another loader called RocketLauncher that can display artwork, manuals, walkthroughs etc. Raspberrypi seems like a fun project you can do with your son, though. It's cheap enough you can make a couple builds with custom cases. In another year or so people will probably have Linux OS images with other front ends like Attract Mode or RetroFE. People are starting to take the old Hyperspin themes and convert them to 720p video themes, which the latest Raspberry Pi can do. I see either one as more of a project or conversation piece than a full on replacement to the authentic thing. It's pretty cool to scroll through previews, virtual box art etc and see which game tickles your fancy then you go find the real thing. I like the idea of building a Pi console because of how green and portable it is though. Takes as much power as charging your phone. You can also make your own handheld with HDMI out if you don't mind putting up with a 3.5" screen.

Emulation is heresy (jk). I respect emulation and it's great that it exists, but it's not for me.

That thing is brilliant with the way he rigged up the cartridge to act as a giant SD card but it's almost sullied by that awful GUI, weird rom names and load times. I'm a picky bastard.

You would think that, but both Gamesters were actually told that the new Chameleon prototype was inside the bar, so he just couldn't resist.
