God damn Imperial Khador... That was some assessment. It's like the definitive assessment of what happened to CGR. Completely agree with your views on the Patreon years. Mark produced some of his finest work ever during those years.

Imperial Khador, I had no idea the company had outsider investors before even Patreon was a thing for the show. That is very interesting info.

It's really a good thing that this all went down a few years ago. If this all happened today, how many tacky videos would be made about "THE FALL OF CLASSIC GAME ROOM." But in all honesty, it is ultimately a tragic situation. No matter what Mark seems to try, he never seems to feel creatively satisfied, and with a few exceptions, most of his fans either forgot that he existed or absolutely hate the direction that his work has taken. In addition, the downfall of CGR as an investment and as a company more or less destroyed Derek, along with a combination of other mental and social issues that unfortunately occurred around the same time. That boy has been a dark place for a long time. Although, I have to wonder. With the speculation that Mark did not enjoy the direction that Undertow took, is there any evidence for that?

Mark certainly did have a dislike towards CGR undertow's bias towards Nintendo lead by Derek which he would address in a sarcastic fashion in a few of his videos. But how much it bothered him is up for speculation. It probably didn't really bother him at all, but I personally think it did with Mark being a fanboy of everything but Nintendo. So having the head of the sub group he created being one of the most bias people towards Nintendo on the platform, and going out of his way to discredit all games and consoles Mark holds dear and gush about Nintendo in a unnecessary fashion would surely piss him off.

Will the real Derek step out of the shadows and care to comment. I know you're in here lurking somewhere.
Anyways, to me it never felt like there was any bad blood between these guys. When it came down to whether or not to continue Undertow, it seems like Mark felt it would cannibalize his own market. It must've been incredibly disappointing to Derek if he wanted to continue but couldn't. Still, these guys met each other at a convention not too long ago if I remember correctly? Seems like they were good acquaintances then.

Thanks Balder, but as I mentioned, my take is in no way definitive. I don't know any of the CGR folks personally, and I wasn't there. I'll take the compliment though. Regarding Mark disliking the Undertow folks, I never had that impression. The on-screen rivalry, beating Derek with the Games.com, etc. was pretty clearly just an act for laughs. Mark isn't the biggest Nintendo fan of course, but I think that was just due to his experiences growing up. If I were 4-5 years older, my formative experiences would probably have been more Atari related too. Mark has explained that they were friendly co-workers, rather than friends, but that makes sense given that CGR was run as a business.

I've said this before, but Mark and Derek should've made more videos together and play Devil's Advocate for each other over particular titles. Like a 'Margaret & David' kind of show (these two movie reviewers who used to be on the ABC). Sure, Mark was funnier, but it would've made every review meatier.
Now, CGR has turned to spam about 80's comics, things which I will never ever see with my own eyes. Such a waste.

Those videos they made towards the end of CGR Mark II were tremendous, some of the absolute best they ever made.

Why did he ever stop making that? It was honestly worth the 5 bucks just in itself. I also highly enjoyed Derek's Manthology Show podcast.

Well, those old comics were printed in the 80's. And any comic book shop holding those titles would always be half and hour away from where I live. They would just clutter up my place anywayz.

I also highly enjoyed Derek's Manthology Show podcast. The amount of editing and crafting was too much for him with not enough revenue/time away from family.
