I never really got the hype around the DKC games. I still enjoyed them and think they're quality games, but I wouldn't consider them among the best platformers of the 16-bit era, or even on the SNES alone.

Sonic is #1. Any other opinion is wrong.

How do you know I own Colonial Marines? And where did you draw the conclusion that I don't own any other Sega games? I have Sonic 1 and 2 for the Genesis (plus Spinball if you count that). I own every Sega console Master System, Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast (the 2 DCs I own though don't work and they are surprisingly rare to come by for me). Edit: Colonial Marines is balls btw. Only good thing about it is the splitscreen co-op and 4 player campaign. 32X or Sega CD? Unfortunately no. But they're counted as add-ons in my book.

Seriously disappointed with this thread. I thought this was going to be a SNES vs Genesis debate, not a comparison of two lackluster games that don't really represent their systems and don't appeal to me.

There's no point in debating something we all know the correct answer to, right guys? TurboGrafx-16.

Got the portable version of Sonic on 3DS today as part of the Sega 3D Classics Collection, it looks nice with a depth effect.

If you don't think the game that the mascot for system is in... that became a pack-in game to sell the system... represents the system... Now that might be most foolish thing you ever said.

I also never got into DKC. It looked impressive when released, but I always found the platforming lackluster. Unlike Sonic or most platformers from the era, DKC's levels look too cramped to me - they offer no verticality while the sprites are big (I think most levels in DKC don't even have vertical scrolling, right?). Sonic's levels are very sprawling in comparison, having multiple routes and secrets - and I'm not even taking into consideration what Sega did for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I'm talking exclusively about Sonic 1. Besides, there's nothing particular to DKC's mechanics: you just walk and jump; if it wasn't for the graphics, it would be exactly like any other subpar mascot platformer from the era. You don't have anything like Yoshi or the cape from Super Mario World, or the transformations from Kirby, or the jetpack from Rocket Knight, or the rolling and momentum-based gameplay from Sonic. It's just standard platforming in cramped levels with a lot of shiny things to collect, so it's not my deal.
Sorry for being somewhat harsh on it, I just don't get what is good about DKC besides the graphics (which don't appeal to me either, hate that pre-rendered look).

Look, all I really wanted going into this thread was a debate on which of these two systems is better, NOT "which of these two games is better". Because TBH I don't really care for either game, but I have a lot to say about the SNES vs Genesis debate, and would rather hear everyone's thoughts on that topic rather than this.

Sounds to me like you need to replay DKC. Especially the mine cart levels.

You just don't understand... The things that I have seen... The daily smoke and fire that year, 1991... The playgrounds ran RED with blood on both sides. "SONIC RULES!" "MARIO IS A DIRTY PLUMBER!" "AT LEAST HE IS A HUMAN BEING, NOT A RODENT!" "GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON'T!" The horror...

Tomb Raider did a great job with that scene.
