I thought we had a thread about it, maybe it was in the old pub.
Have you guys seen the new trailer? Here it is:
The environments are beautiful (much more than I expected for a budget game). I thought the characters are ok, except for the muscular guy, which looks too cartoonish for the somewhat realistic setting of Shenmue - not that this would be any problem.
There are a lot of complaints about the animation, especially the faces, which indeed look stiff. But then, this is a game in development, so they're probably still working on the animation - and budget/indie games usually have very limited facial animation anyway, as they usually don't have resources for expensive motion capture. Of course, as Shenmue relies a lot on its dialogues and cutscenes, it will be nice if they can use a better animation, but I don't see that as a problem.
I'm glad they showed some fighting (albeit in cutscenes), as that was my favourite part in Shenmue and I was thinking this one would leave it aside to focus only on story. It probably won't be as deep as the previous games, since they had the Virtua Fighter team behind them, but I hope it's fun.

Beautiful soundtrack and it looks visually great for the most part, but the character animations look last gen. I wish Sony would fully back this game to be a real AAA, because that's what Shenmue was, a fantastic AAA before AAA was a real term.

Looks like intentional stylistic choices. For reasons pertaining to camp

I'm guessing these facial animations are just placeholders, as the voice acting is probably not done yet (so it would make no sense for them to have already done the facial animations). I think they just wanted to show a teaser already, as the backers are putting a lot of pressure on them - this is the first time they actually show the game in action. You can clearly see that the models aren't rigged yet - they just move their mouths when speak, while Ryo's face doesn't even move. But I wouldn't expect a great animation anyway, considering the scope of the game and all. Balder - It would be really great if Sony or Sega had worked with Yu Suzuki to make this a bigger game - Shenmue was conceived as a high-budget series from the start, so anything else is a compromise. I just hope that, even with a lower budget, Yu Suzuki is still capable to realize his ideas and tell a good story. And throw in some awesome fights. EDIT: billspreston - To be fair, at least the english voice acting in the previous games is HYSTERICAL (the japanese one is fine, though). By the way, I keep saying the game is on a budget, but keep in mind I'm saying that in comparison to the budget of your regular open world game, and even in comparison to the previous Shenmue titles.

Looks like intentional stylistic choices. For reasons pertaining to campingCould be. The trailer doesn’t give much away, but it does showcase sprawling landscapes and incredibly detailed city skylines. The characters do come across as a bit blockier though — more Final Fantasy X than Final Fantasy XV. "One of the themes, the main feelings that you get from the game is a feeling of nostalgia," Yu Suzuki, director and producer of the game said in an interview with Eurogamer. "That's one of the special qualities of Shenmue, and the fact it was one of the first open world games. That theme, that feeling of nostalgia, continues in all the games."
To be fair, at least the english voice acting in the previous games is HYSTERICAL (the japanese one is fine, though). I hope they make it similarly bad undeniably-100%-no-brainwashing-involved GOOD. I spent a good deal of change in the arcade back in the day to laugh at the line delivery in House of the Dead (and also to play a darn good game, naturally). It's a part of Sega's charm for me. Greetings from Capricho, btw. The locals all try to be bad, but I admire their good intentions. Speaking of Sega, kinda sad to see a new Shenmue with no Sega logo in the credit. Obviously this isn't the same Sega team of yesteryear, so it doesn't really make a difference, but still. At least it's still Yu Suzuki at the helm. Can't really ask for more than that.

That music reminds me of Panzer Dragoon on the Saturn and Old Sega in general.
I like that.

Presumably, the game as far as we know has a budget of six million and change. The facial animations are a bit lacking, sure, but Mass Effect Andromeda and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite have budgets of many millions more and really couldn't get better results than we see in Shenmue 3. All things considered, I think Yu is doing a bang up job.

Yu Suzuki has confirmed that the facial animations aren't done (just placeholders) and the character models are also temporary: Quick interview on KotakuI suppose they are working on the main gameplay and environments first, to only then work on the characters. I think they weren't really ready to release a teaser, but again, the kickstarter backers are putting a lot of pressure to see how the development is going.

I think they just wanted to show a teaser already, as the backers are putting a lot of pressure on them I would be surprised if a company as big as Sony cares even the tiniest bit about a bunch of whiney brats on Kickstarter. If they felt any pressure to put out a trailer, it would come from real investors who would want to see just new stuff in general on a quarterly basis, this being the middle of Q3.

It could also be that they've learned lessons from shitshows like Mighty No. 9, which would go silent for long stretches and piss off backers. Maybe they are just trying to be a bit more open with development.

All's I know is that as an interdimensional time traveler I can tell you that's what Shenmue 3 looked like in alternate 2005 with the Dreamcast expansion pack.

You know what? They could have shown just the ambients, or featured only the little girl. That trailer left a lot of people (me included) with a bad impression that didn't need to exist if they limited themselves to showing only what was ready.
