I work a particularly early shift every Thursday (early for me, considering I'm a total night owl) and recently I've started staying awake all of Wensday (plus or minus 24 sleepless hours total) and falling asleep early in the evening so I can get up on Thursday morning and won't be late for work. It's a bizarre strategy, but it has been working well for me. However, I am concerned that I might be doing damage to my brain by doing this, even if it's only once a week.
Should I be worried? Can an occasional 24 sleepless hours damage my brain in any way?

On a different topic, why are you "Gay for Melee"? Because Melee is my one true gaming love. Now answer my question! Ehh, if you don't have the medical facts, then don't worry about it.

Your body is good at giving you warnings. If you feel sick or tired as fuck after a while, it might be because of that.

Did somebody call for General Google?!(That's me. I'm General Google.) Following minutes of extensive research and internet searches, I, General Google, have come to the conclusion that staying awake for 24 hours is entirely unhealthy! What's more, my sources are European in origin and come from lab-coat-wearing scientists! Your usual distrust need not appear! Neuroscientists in Norway took 20 healthy people and Balder and subjected them to 23 hours without sleep. Then they performed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tests on their brains. What they found was significant changes in the white matter inside the brain after a day without sleep, finding that sleep deprivation was associated with widespread fractional anisotropy. Basically, they discovered what we all knew already: going without sleep can be disorienting. It makes you groggy and makes simple tasks more difficult to do. What their study found, though, was that all of those feelings are caused by a physical change inside your brain. They hypothesized that this change can be restored to normal by sleeping regularly for the next few days, but they haven't tested what would happen if someone were to do this as often as you do. Their study: LINKBut the body reacts to a lack of sleep in other ways as well! A study in Sweden found that going 24 hours without sleep can affect your genes. According to the Swedish scientists, long term poor sleep habits have already been linked to diabetes and obesity. Their new study, however, shows that even one night without sleep can alter the genes that control the biological clocks of our cells - the so-called "Clock genes." Molecular analyses of the collected tissue samples showed that the regulation and activity of clock genes was altered after one night of sleep loss. The activity of genes is regulated by a mechanism called epigenetics. This involves chemical alterations to the DNA molecule such as methyl groups – a process called methylation – which regulates how the genes are switched on or off. The researchers found that clock genes had increased numbers of such DNA marks after sleep loss. They also found that the expression of the genes, which is indicative of how much of the genes’ product is made, was altered. Like the previous study, the researchers are unsure of the long term effects of missing sleep this way or if the genetic changes are temporary. So I guess the real question is, are you a gambling man, Spirit Bomb?
