How come DOS games aren't available for emulation, while older PC games (like Oregon trail) are?
I ask because I'm really interested in playing some old DOS games that aren't available digitally. Alien Trilogy, for example, is not available on GOG.com, Steam, or any other game service, and doesn't have an emulated version available, yet the DOSbox emulator (used to get the game working on modern systems) itself is completely free to download.
What gives? I thought emulation was legal?
I suppose I could just download an emulation version of the console ports of Alien Trilogy, but the controls would probably be really screwed up (like, not being able to look with the mouse).
I've never emulated games before, so I'm just not sure about any of this. Do you guys have any advice for me?

What gives? I thought emulation was legal? What made you think that?

Emulation is legal and tons of dos games are available as legal downloads, commonly referred to as abandonware. Alien Trilogy is easy to find as abandonware and works with dosbox.

Of course I do. Just to clarify: creating or using an emulator is perfectly legal; an emulator itself doesn't violate any copyright laws. So, if I download a Saturn emulator, then use it to play one of my original Saturn cds, I'm not violating any laws. But downloading games is still very illegal, of course. So, MeleeMonk, there's no problem in downloading and using DOSBox, which is the most used DOS emulator around. But downloading a DOS game that you don't have is still piracy. As Armored Core Raven says, though, a lot of DOS games are considered "abandonware", which means their developers either ceased to exist or outright abandoned the game. This is a gray legal area, and most people see no problem in distributing games whose copyright owners doesn't even exist anymore. If Alien Trilogy is a DOS game, you may look for it in abandonware sites (if that's its case) and then use DOSBox to play it. By the way, I have the Saturn version; it's not a great game, but it's a somewhat fun FPS.

Cervantes Do you know the names of any of these abandonware sites? Also, "But downloading a DOS game that you don't have is still piracy." That's only if I download the ROM, right? I thought emulated games aren't illegal to download like ROMs?

Do you know the names of sites where I can download abandonware games? (I assume you've done this yourself at some point)

I thought emulated games aren't illegal to download like ROMs? There's no such thing as an "emulated game". Every emulated game consist of an Emulator + ROM. Sometimes, older games are released for free with their source code by the developers. In these rare cases, the fans may use the source code to update the game and port it to newer systems; this is all perfectly legal and is not emulation at all. Maybe that's what you're referring to? I remember abandonia.com having a lot of stuff, but I haven't visited it in a long time. It seems they do have Alien Trilogy, and it also seems you can run it with DOSBox.

Cervantes No, that's not what I was referring to. I just have a poor understanding of emulation, but you've helped shed some light on the subject, so kudos for that. I'll check out abandonia.com, thanks! By the way, how often do you think people get caught downloading ROMs? Tool Assisted Superplays and Speedruns are all over Youtube, but I've never seen any action taken against the uploaders or their videos (although I did hear one story about Nintendo taking down a speedrun a good while back, but that's it).

MeleeMonk - About actions against ROM downloads, the only ones I've ever heard of are DMCA takedowns against emulation websites. Nintendo will take down youtube videos with their games, but that has nothing to do with emulation (Mark has complained a lot about that, it seems youtube constantly takes out the monetization of his Nintendo videos or even the videos themselves).
