I love what Sega tried to do here. Very interesting controller. The D-pad lets it down, though, which is surprising since previous Sega d-pads were so good.

Totally forgot about that. Ha! Yeah, wonky. But I have to say, I don't remember it being a problem in my admittedly limited time with the console. At least it had a clip to keep it going where it should...

At least it had a clip to keep it going where it should... The clip made it slighty better, but the problem is it made the cable's effective length shorter.

I never had much of a problem with the cable, but I think that it's just an overall step down from the Saturn 3D controller aside from appearance and the VMU gimmick. Removing two buttons which probably could've been put to good use was one of the big offenders. It also would've been nice if Sega had the foresight to add a 2nd analog stick. Before the DC even released, Sega already had games that took advantage of 2 sticks like Virtual On so it's not like it was a foreign concept to them.

The Dreamcast controller was what ruined the system for me. It is BY FAR the worst 6th gen controller, with the fewest number of buttons and only 1 joystick; compared to the Xbox, GC, & PS2 controllers, it feels woefully primitive, and it's even a step down from the Sega Saturn controller. Even the PS1 controller had more buttons.

Why the hell did Sega downgraded it?

Why the hell did Sega downgraded it? No idea. It was just a bad decision. Which is ironic, considering most people think the Dreamcast is an improvement over the Saturn (I personally don't, but I don't speak for everyone). A lot of people blamed Sega of America's then-CEO (Bernie something) for the Saturn's failure/shortcomings, but at least the Saturn had awesome controllers.

Both the N64 and the Sega Dreamcast controllers always felt like proper adult Western size, just like the Wii U gamepad, for the most part console controllers usually feel as if they were made with Japanese kids in mind, not big enough, that is why arcade stick are always better, at least for arcade games. Having big controllers is good for that reason, although that often means a lost in the aesthetics.
