Before net neutrality is gone, in case it is ever gone, I'm obtaining over 1K movies for my blu-ray as we speak, to keep them as part of the menu and choose them whenever, digitally through an external small hard drive I connect behind it. After I finish getting all these movies there is a chance my taste may change when I end up re-watching many from the past. However I wanted to make a top 12 list before all this madness just to see how films rank for me as of right now.
---------------------------------------------------
My Top 12
---------------------------------------------------
1. Batman The Dark Knight [Director: Christopher Nolan]
This comes as a surprise to me because I definitely prefer Michael Keaton over Christian Bale, and I absolutely love Jack Nicholson as the joker as well, but I can't deny that not only this is my favorite DC Comics movie, my favorite Batman movie, and my favorite acting performance (Heath Ledger's), it is also my favorite movie of all time, I'm always impressed how every time I put it on, it feels as exciting as if it was the first time, truly remarkable.
2. Fight Club [Director: David Fincher]
Probably one of the most acclaimed movies for any male that watches it, there is something in there that we can't deny resonantes with our masculinity and with our relation as men with society.
3. RoboCop [Director: Paul Verhoeven]
This film is perfection. If you watched this as a kid and you were not mind blown there is something wrong with you. From the score, to the action, to the cinematics, and the plot, this is movie is simply superb.
4. Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back [Director: Irvin Kershner]
John William's music alone wins here, but to me this is the prime time for Anakin Skywalker as one of the most iconic opposite forces in an universe that presents him as a necessity, and not just as an obstacle. He is a real treat, but he is also the solution for growing into the force, and without him it would be impossible to follow the path of the Jedi. The resemblance to our lives's struggles is definitely not a coincidence.
5. Terminator 2 Judgement Day [Director: James Cameron]
This film was huge for me, not only it has one of the coolest most resilient enemies in film, it also shows that despite how fantastic is the direction of the narrative, it presents it as a real possibility that feels on par with the direction of the real narrative of our actual human history.
6. The Matrix Reloaded [Directors: The Wachowski Brothers]
Don't get me wrong, I love the first movie as well, but this sequel is everything I wanted from an action movie, from a sci-fi movie, and from a philosophical movie. At the time I wasn't able to distinguish the CGI as I do now, but it still looks cool nevertheless. It is probably one of the coolest movies ever made including sound, setting, film filters, dialogues, and plot.
7. There's Something About Marry [Directors: The Farrelly Brothers]
I had to mention a romantic comedy, as that genre is without a doubt one of my favorites, maybe because those are the films I love to share with someone.
8. Catch Me If You Can [Director: Steven Spielberg]
The way Frank Abagnale Jr. sees the world in this film, as a playground to do as he pleases finding the easiest way to accomplish things, and get away with it, it is once again something I can relate with, in my personal life, I had never taken it to the levels this guy has, not I think I could, but to an extend, little social experiments here and there had always been a big part of me, and a good representation of that child inside all of us.
9. The Truman Show [Director: Peter Weir]
I can't deny that to some extend there is a level of paranoia that once in a while makes me get the sensation that everything around me is staged, scripted, and acted for a higher purpose, where I feel the strength of my character is getting tested by everybody, and as a consequence I can relate perfectly with the character.
10. 300 [Director: Zack Snyder]
A weird choice for many, however I have to give props to the art style, the manliness of the film, and an accurate take on how we like to picture ancient history and epic human accomplishments of the past. The story itself carries that sense of achieving, and the overcoming of the impossible that we can all relate as something that excite us. Sure there is implicit anal sex, sure there is silliness, and sure there is fantasy, but that's what films are for.
11. Rush [Director: Ron Howard]
It came as a surprise that this film got to me, it is one of those movies that feel random in these kind of lists, but for me it captures the natural spirit of sports in general, based on real life and presenting the essence of what makes these iconic real life stars shine, this film makes it all relateable.
12. Edward Scissorhands [Director Tim Burton]
In a way this film always felt surreal to me, maybe because everything in this film has some of the heaviest qualities we often find in our own dreams, through which we get transported to an alternate reality inside our own psyche, and that by looking at the big picture we can't deny are a big part of our life experience.
