I got two games that can't make it past the Playstation 2 logo. Can they be repaired or should I throw them out?

If there are no visible scratches, try using a PS2 emulator to see if your computer can read the discs fine. If there are noticeable scratches, then have the discs resurfaced, and try again. Playstation 2 lasers had notoriously short lifespans.

If its not seriously scratched, try it on a different system to make sure. If it works, you may need to re-calibrate the laser lens on your PS2-- it's not hard, just take a bit of time (I've done it and brought PS2s and Dreamcasts 'back to life' on many occasions).
If its scratched your only options are to get it resurfaced (resurfacing machines are expensive) or use it as a coaster...or maybe as part of a video game-related art project.

What most people call recalibrating is just over-volting the failing diode. Replacement is the only proper fix, if the diode is confirmed to be the problem.
