One of my all-time favorites. Kubrick was a genius. Just a shame he didn't live to see the year his movie takes place... This Week: 2001: A Space OdysseyChosen by: spidershinobiReleased: 1968 Starring: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, Douglas Rain Director: Stanley Kubrick Producer: Stanley Kubrick Writer: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke

This dude was an amazing director. He also made the The Shining, and according to some, he was that good that he even worked with the government to film the first Moon landing scenes. Which without falling for lame conspiracy theories it makes sense considering they wanted to film something so far away on a live stream in 1969 with a radiation belt in between. Specially if they travelled over 237,000 miles on this I assume not very comfortable aluminum space ship: That said, the 2001 Space Odyssey theme by Richard Strauss is freaking epic. You can hear it on footage of the Apollo missions, and I don't blame them. If I just crossed areas of space as hot as 2,700 C degrees on a space ship made with materials that melt at 600 C degrees and still survived both ways, I would feel like a total champ and would love to wake up with such an epic music. The only major conspiracy I would actually buy into more easily is the fakeness of the cold war. I mean c'mom, just to be sarcastic: Remember all the Russians that died in the hands of our soldiers? None. And remember how many third world countries political systems were affected with internal guerrilla wars and contras? All to end up with a brand new central bank in place. Do you remember when Moscow and Washington D.C. were first bombed? It never happened. Were Russia and USA arch enemies in WWII? Nope. But do they both had Jewish privately owned central banks? Yup. Playing which monkey gets to space first sounds like a clever entertainment between friends.

Hahaha I had never been able to listen to Alex Jones because his personality makes me feel like I'm watching brainwashing Fox News LOL! At least he doesn't sound as fake as the CNN people. But I heard that once in a while he says good stuff here and there.

2001 is such a fantastic film. I can see why many people have it as their favorite sci-fi film. Interstellar ain't got shit on 2001, not even close. Kubrick was so far ahead of his time that he still is. The scope of it is so grand and vast. I particularly enjoy the acid trip scene. So beautiful and without the use of CGI. This is my favorite Kubrick film, closely followed by The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and then A Clockwork Orange. I consider these 4 movies perfect. Dr. Strangelove is also pretty good, but has aged a little.
A funny story I have about 2001. A big group friends and I once tried to watch it at 2 AM. It was miserable, and one of the dumbest movie related thing I've ever tried. We called it quits when the shuttle landed at the moon.

Mel Gibson is an absolute piece of gutter trash and anyone who supports that bastard should be castrated while still alive, then beheaded and dumped in a landfill. Regarding Kubrick, I think he was a jerk for how he treated his actors. I've heard from multiple sources that he often made them do hundreds of takes just for his own satisfaction. With The Shining it was so bad that Shelley Duvall became seriously ill from stress and her hair started falling out in clumps. I'm not about to praise someone who treats their crew that way.

You should never wish such a horrible thing for any human being. That is a horrible thing to say. Plus why do you hate him? Just because he has an opinion doesn't make him evil. In fact artists should have the freedom to express themselves as they please or it is no longer art. Filmmaking is also a form of artistic expression and should possess the same kind of freedom.

What? I thought for a second there that we were on the same page about Mel Gibson? I hate him because he has abused his rights as a human being on planet Earth. Namely, he has added 9 CHILDREN onto this planet, which in this day and age is absolutely unacceptable and is a crime against our planet. On top of that, he is a self proclaimed ultra conservative. What is especially troubling is that all of those 9 kids will probably grow up to be bigoted just like him and themselves will go on to have 9 kids of their own and deny global warming. He deserves all the scathing criticism he gets for playing dirty just to get his way. No matter how much he apologizes (not that he ever would), there is no way he can undo the crime he has committed. When you have a kid, it's here to stay, and there's nothing that can be done. Americans live more unsustainably than do citizens of any other country, especially when they come from parents as wealthy as people like him. Oh, and then there's the fact that he's a racist and anti-semitic and has been known to beat women on occasion.

One thing that annoys me to no end is that people have attached an "art movie" seal to 2001. Which means that it got this image of a boring, abstract movie about nothing at all. I've seen people being legitimately surprised to learn that there's an actual plot in 2001 and that it's an horror movie with a crazy AI. For all the talk about the movie in the media, most terrible journalists/critics parroted the bland appraisal for the apes scenes (disconnecting it from the rest of the movie), the cut from the bone to a spaceship, the spaceships "waltzing" and the trippy visuals later on (again, always presented without context). I never even see 2001 being described as a horror movie, which is what it really is, and a damn great one at that, one of the best. The three main parts of it - apes, moon and going to Jupiter - are all very haunting. Are the spoiler tags necessary? I'll use them anyway: HAL is such a great character; he has this very calm, complacent way of talking that makes him truly scary: so much that one of my favourite scenes is when he ends an argument with Dave (basically condemning Dave to die) with the very calm "Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.", and then he falls silent. Holy shit, that's so condescending, infuriating and scary. The use of silence, of all things, is consistently terrifying: like when we learn that HAL knows how to read lips, or when he kills Frank. The tagline from Alien, "In space, no one can hear you scream", is even more appropriate here.
I also like how menacing the image of the monolith is, how it's always there watching/following humanity's progress through the eras. The sound effect for when it appears is chilling. Great choice, spidershinobi . I wish more people knew how truly awesome (and absolutely not boring) this movie really is. Also relevant:

Sorry for the double post, but just to say that I find it interesting how MeleeMonk 's post condemns Gibson in two paragraphs for having 9 children while it leaves the whole racism/antisemitism/women beatings to a "by the way, he also etc." short phrase at the very end of the comment. It's the exact inverse of "arson, muder and jaywalking".

What? I thought for a second there that we were on the same page about Mel Gibson? Well, just because I'm not anti-semitic doesn't mean I want to kill anti-semitic people.

What I think is that people have the wrong idea about art movies in general. People think art movies are generally boring. This is completely untrue. People think art movies equals pretentious. I on the other hand think that it means the movie will be different, different from all the generic crap I've been watching for ages. That's why art movies rock, because it's not the same fucking movie all over again (angrily starring at Disney).
