I'm not sure what to think of Sword and Shield. I haven't played them and I was really surprised when I read about the intense backlash these entries received from fans before & after they came out. They even generated a social movement: #Dexit! Here's one example I've watched of negative fan backlash:

Most of the criticism seems to revolve around the lack of any meaningful new mechanics or additions, very poor graphics, casualized difficulty level, very few returning pokemon, and some other gripes players have had with these two games.

Hmmm...

Seems like Gamefreak did a shady job on Sword and Shield. I don't mind the poor graphics or the lack of returning pokemon, but the casualized difficulty level would definitely bother me. So therefore I'm not sure I would enjoy Sword & Shield. I'd be willing to try them, but if what these fans say is true, I would probably lose interest fast.

Pokemon Shield was decent but not great. Difficulty seemed on par with other Pokemon games to me, outside of experience share allowing to level up faster. I actually like experience share since it allows for switching up my team often without a lot of grinding. The wild trainer area while connected online runs awful and turns the game into a slideshow, it even crashed my game once or twice. I played near release though so I wouldn't be surprised if that got improved since then with a patch. The main backlash the game got was it didn't have all the pokemon in the series, which I didn't care about. Story was pretty boring, I got bored and never actually beat it.

This is definitely next gen by looking at them. When I finally try the 3DS ones I may decide if I want to jump into these too just to see the evolution, plus these are games you can talk to people about because it seems many people play them.
