Funny you should mention Moby Dick as I actually bought after I read Bartleby by Melville. I'm probably going to read it also at some point. As for my inclination: I don't strongly side with any side. I find it very interesting to get to know more about others' opinions, but I haven't determined myself. What I do believe is that it's not much you can actually know for sure, hence my interest in existentialism. Why are we here? Does anything matter? It's easy to get depressed when thinking about this stuff, but I'd rather be unsure and reflected than be happy and ignorant. What about you stratogustav ? What do you think? Well, for me personally I am certain our existance is not limited to our thoughts, there is definitely a depth beyond our brain thinking to who we are, all you need to do is a little clear of mind with breathing meditation and you know you exist beyond your thinking aka the ego image of yourself, it is not a feeling or an emotion, it is simply knowing, which is the kind of thing most religions try to tap into because is definitely there, and it is definitely not there anymore when people die, for example when you see a corpse, there is a sense that the person is no longer there and that all you are seeing is a body, it is a completely different sensation to seeing someone sleeping or closing their eyes holding their breath and not moving at all. These are just examples, people with amnesia or alzeihmer, may not remeber their name or their past, but we are not the sum of our memories, and that is clear even to the naked eye by looking at them. That said, we can only speculate of why we are here, my speculation is that we are here to learn to love one another, to experience a level of empathy that can only be achieved through knowing people are going to die some day, this knowledge that fascilitates such empathy among living beings is what ultimately arouses the pursue of a greater good, in other words as if we were some kind of openings through which the Universe can know itself, but that was already there and that will always be, which is why it is definitely likely that we will always have a possibility to come back multiple times if that makes any sense, although there is no way to know that happens or will. These things can only be depressing to the ego, because the ego just like the body is an object, an abstract object but still an object, which is what fascilittes a level of attachment towards it, the fact that it is also very persuasive doesn't help, it can easily make you believe that it is you, however ego can easily be dismissed when we factor time, the ego of ourselves when we were 12 is different of the ego of ourselves now. This is why if you gave the option to the ego to keep your body at let's say age 17 but you will have to choose your ego at age 12 versus your current ego, it will choose your current ego because the ego knows the ego at age 12 was a complete different one and would not want to die, exept it fails to see that the ego may had been different, but you are still the same you were at age 12 regardless of whether every cell in your body is completely different, experiencing the world from the same place no matter what time in your life you are in. Basically, I see ego as an abstract type of clothing that is constantly changing, which is why it is very dangerous to identify yourself with it, ego is just a sum of thoughts, thoughts are not you, thoughts are like farts, they don't mean anything, you don't need to think to know you are there, you take a breath you open your eyes and you know you are there, and you can see thoughts just like the little distraction they are simply floating. Descartes came up with the idea of "I think therefore I am", thinking that was it, but he failed to see that he didn't discovered who he was, but what he thinks of him, as someone that exists, in other words without knowing, he revealed the main error in human psyque, the one to avoid, but that it is easily deceiving and that anyone can fall victim of at any time. Not that it matters. In my beliefs it is this constant struggle through the ups and downs of the world what brings you forward as some kind of spiritual development that grows regardless of your free will by simply being here in this realm if that's how you wish to call it. At the end the sum of atoms is inignificant empty space because even the most concret object is part of that illusion, but your actual being is not.

Simple rules: Be true to yourself, honest in all things, loyal to your friends/family, and deadly to your enemies. Everything else is just gravy. Don't wonder why, just do.

Simple rules: Be true to yourself, honest in all things, loyal to your friends/family, and deadly to your enemies. Everything else is just gravy.Don't wonder why, just do. The first thing you said, "be true to yourself", is the beginning to all philosophy. There is a natural desire men have to accomplish that, and this is why a lot of men wonder around that goal. The issue is that often times it is easy to look in the wrong places because everyone assumes it is so important that they think it must be hidden for that reason, when in reality it is displayed in plain sight, you just can't point at it. At the end I agree with Shakespeare, nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so. That can be said for pretty much anything.

Don't get me wrong, a sense of morality exists for a reason, and principles are good sign posts that in a way guide you in the process, but ultimately we are no one to judge those that are behind because we are also behind others ahead.
