As I'm typing this, my father is having major surgery. Yesterday, while visiting the new building where my brother works, he slipped on the stairs and fractured his hip in 3 places.
He's not a young man anymore. We don't know how he'll turn out. He may be fine, he may need a walking stick, which will be hard because his shoulders aren't strong. He may end up wheelchair bound. Btw we live in a 2 storey house.
I've been gearing up to move out. I'm 80% the way there. My room looks like a store room. My books, my dvds, my consoles are packed and sealed into cardboard boxes I got from work.
This may be the final incentive he needs to sell the house, but until then, he may have to rely on me, because mum's no athlete either.

Sorry to hear that centipede. I hope your father comes out of the surgery well. My father's been in for a few in the last few years, and it is always stressful, even when it is low-risk. |

scipioafricanus I feel like that's what I've been doing these past ten years. My old man will turn 79 in November. Mum is 75, has a walking stick and arthritis in her hands. I've been at home because jobs. I currently work in a supermarket. Skilled jobs, like web developer, don't care much for qualifications, more about networking and portfolios. It's not what you know but WHO you know. I recently got enough hours to move out, but depending on what happens, moving out may have to wait...

Have you considered getting a bachelor degree?
Balechor degrees are often a great investment with very good long term returns. It depends of what career you choose, but it is never too late, you can always get one, and 4 years go by super fast. If you think about it 2014 was pretty much yesterday.

Today, I visited him in hospital and got a clearer picture of what happened. With certain stairs, there are yellow lines to indicate the edges, for reasons. When he tried to cross it, he misjudged the height in his head and fell down.
He's putting on a brave face and also sounding optimistic. He'll be in until Tuesday, plus 6 weeks of rehabilitation.
