What do you think of its little D-pad? I ask because I've heard a lot of people complain about it, and it seems to be one of the most polarizing aspects of the controller. Please share your opinion on it.

I'm a bit mixed. For me it has a lot of the same issues as the 360 D-pad. Internally, it is a big plastic piece, because the face buttons themselves are quite far away from the board. To me it has always felt a bit mushy. It is also a tad on the small side, which feels awkward when playing side-scrolling games on the Game Boy Player, for example. That said, it still does the job, and I logged a lot of time on side-scrollers on the Game Boy Player, so it didn't stop my enjoyment.

All Nintendo D-Pads before the Wii U had been the absolute best im terms of responsiveness, and functionality, but many times their ergonomics haven't been ideal, and that's where the competition have been able to take advantage in their proposals.
Nintendo no longer holds that patent exclusively, the competition is more leveled now, so nowadays anyone can basically make a competent D-Pad if they please, also while having proper ergonomics.

I've used both extensively and they're on opposite ends of the spectrum; one works well and the other doesn't work right. While it's far from the best D-pad I've used, I have absolutely no complaints about the gamecube controller's D-pad, and I honestly think it's as good as any D-pad Nintendo has ever made. I acknowledge that it's rather small and out of the way, two complaints commonly made against it, but these points don't bother me much at all. Ultimately it feels just like the Nintendo D-pads that came before it in terms of build quality, just smaller in size. It's true what Yoda says. "Size matters not" indeed. It's a perfectly functional little D-pad, and I have adapted to it and grown to love it. I have no complaints, so 5/5 for me. I prefer it over the dualshock D-pads for any genre of games, and it should never even be mentioned in the same sentence as the Xbox D-pads.

Sorry Maestro. That's my opinion, and you disliking it doesn't give you the right to issue ultimatums.

Too small and it honestly doesn't feel as responsive as some of the earlier Nintendo D-pads. Combine that with the nonsensical face button layout and you get (imo) a bad time playing 2d games. It's unfortunate because the controller is great otherwise (minus the c-stick).

Sorry Maestro. That's my opinion, and you disliking it doesn't give you the right to issue ultimatums. Well it's pretty much universally accepted that the pre-Xbox One D-pads are garbage, and I've never heard someone compare the gamecube controller's to it until you did just now. I used to play Sonic 3 everyday after school for years as a kid on Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube, and that little D-pad never acted fishy, never screwed up. Not once. I'm not sure if the controller you play on was bought used and is of crap condition or maybe you're using a clone/imitation controller you bought off Ebay, but I gurantee that is not how the official Nintendo GC controller D-pads feel.

I've noticed this is a common type of assumption with you. Someone doesn't share your experience, so they must have been doing it wrong, and you consider your opinions to be universal. Someone doesn't revere Melee to the same near-religious degree you do? They have must have been playing it wrong. Someone has a different opinion of a controller? There must have been something wrong with the controller they used. If you wanted to start a discussion about how great the GameCube controller was with no dissenting opinions, perhaps that should have been in the thread title. The GameCube controller is a decent one in my opinion, marred by what I consider to be a d-pad that was a bit small and mushy. I owned several (original and wavebirds) on my original system many years ago and still have one of each. I'm glad you had a fine experience with it, but you don't seem interested in a discussion so I'll just leave it at that.

might be my favourite controller ever. but yeah, the d-pad sucks. i tried playing snk vs capcom 2 with the d-pad. might as well be playing the game with my feet.
edit: the good thing about the d-pad is that most of the first party games don't require it as a main function of gameplay, so it doesn't really get in the way.

I don't know if anyone's said this already, but it reminds me a lot of the Xbox 360 controller.

Not even trying to shit on Melee right now but I'd rather use a 360 controller for 2d games than a Gamecube controller. Unless if maybe it was a fighting game.

Bogard I plan on buying the Gamecube version of SNK vs Capcom 2 in the future, since I've never played any version and I've always wanted to.
