It should come to no surprise for anyone here that I'm not a huge fan of looser gun control laws. I find it ridiculous that people think more guns is the solution to this problem. However, I do see that some countries do quite well regardless of how many guns they have like Switzerland. So where does the problem lie? Is the US' gun culture so bad that this is inevitable? Maybe something should be done about the way the US handles guns. Maybe have some laws that teaches common sense for guns. Norway has plenty of guns per citizen, but I never see guns because people aren't allowed to carry them around in the streets, and there are pretty stricts laws thag prevent people from tossing guns around the house. Everyone who buys here has to take a theory test. This is true. It's amazing how a few simple restrictions/checks can dramatically reduce gun violence in a country. As I've said before, in America the only thing you have to do to acquire guns is pass a criminal record check and be over 18 years of age. That's it. They don't check your mental health history, require you to take a test, or anything like that. From what I understand in Norway they check everything; criminal record, mental health history, and they require you to apply for a permit before owning guns. It's foolproof compared to our system.

Anders Breivik might argue with foolproof.

Anders Breivik might argue with foolproof. Of course it's not foolproof. Luckily they have made some countermeasures so that it's not easy to make fertilizer bombs anymore. At least there's not a shooting every other week here.

scipioafricanus - Yeah, while I do agree with you that evil finds a way and there will never be a foolproof way to stop terrible people, you do have to admit that you had to remember a very isolated 2011 example to point out a Norwegian shooting spree, while on the US this specific kind of crime is happening on an almost biweekly basis (I suspect in China it's not usual news either). Hell, even in countries more violent than the US, the "crazy dude that snaps and go killing people at random or according to a hate speech" is not an usual crime at all - as a common occurrence, this seems almost like a thing specific to the US. Even in my country, which is more violent than the US, I can only remember three instances of crimes clearly like that. I don't know what the exact solution would be (personally I think more restrictions and, more importantly, enforcing those restrictions would mean less crazy people with guns, but that's just my impression), but it's past the time the government actually do something about it instead of, every time, say "Meh, video games". A legit curiosity: does the current american government has any proposal to stop/decrease this kind of crime? Any alternative to restricting guns (as it seems to meet a lot of resistance from the public opinion)?

Any alternative to restricting guns (as it seems to meet a lot of resistance from the public opinion)? The firearms used have been around for over 100 years, designs and actions; not necessarily models. But to most of us, this is a relatively new occurrence (last 20 years or so). So what has changed? Why wasn't there a massive string of these in the decades prior?
Well THE RISE OF VIDEO GAMES, that is why!
Now that just sounds foolish, since it isn't true.
But look at how many of these goofs are on prescription drugs or have mental health issues. A another big one that they never bring up, how many of these "people" are from broken homes? How many of them simply don't have a strong father figure showing them what is right and wrong? Now those three things have go up in the last 20 years +.
Or it could just be cus Doom is cool.

I doubt that Stephen Paddock (the Las Vegas Strip shooter) could've injured over 900 people (including the dozens that he killed) with just a knife. Attacking children with a knife is one thing, but when you try to kill other adults with a knife it becomes exceptionally more difficult. The killing capacity of firearms far exceeds knives.

Or it could just be cus Doom is cool. It certainly is. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! I generally avoid discussing these things because I have no research on the subject and don't have any data on it, so my opinion is very superficial and full of doubt. That said: it seems to be very reasonable to say that a lot of those people have/had mental health issues and were on prescription drugs; the problem is that in every other country there's no less people with mental health problems (unless there's some data proving that americans are more prone to mental issues), so it still doesn't fully explain why in the US it's so common that those people present a far more usual danger than in other countries. The broken homes thing is another reasonable point and certainly linked to it, but again: as a Latin American, I know the US isn't even close to have the same societal problems / as many completely broken homes as third world countries (just look into how terrible and vast the favelas are), so if that was it, we would hear of random school shootings in Latin America every week. TL;DR: Mental health issues/broken homes are part of the explanation and should be dealt with, but still doesn't explain why the US is particularly affected in a way that even worse countries in those areas aren't.

I believe I mentioned last holiday season that a company in my state gave their employees handguns as a christmas present? Well this year my small redneck town is having a raffle this Thanksgiving where the 25 winners will each take home a free high-claibar hunting rifle, no background check or anything necessary. According to the flyers the winner just needs to be 18 years or older to receive it. Let's just hope no one who puts their name in the ballet has a criminal record or a history of mental illness, because that's all we can do.
Coincidentally, an indoor shooting range is being built across the street from a Farm and Fleet I frequent in a different nearby town. I wasn't even aware that there was a demand (locally) for an indoor shooting range, but I shouldn't be that surprised.

www.cnn.com/2020/01/06/us/kids-shot-throwing-snowballs-milwaukee-trnd/index.html"Two children shot by unidentified driver in Milwaukee after throwing snowballs at his passing truck" Just disgusting. I mean, I hear about shootings in my state every day on the news, but stories like this just makes my stomach turn. Remember when I said in a separate recent thread how horrible the midwest's gun culture is?

Holy Shit, this is almost as bad as the Sandy Hook massacre! And here I thought America was finally getting over gun violence after all these years. I wonder what 2nd amendment supporters have to say about this? If Texas fully condones concealed carry, then how come one of the heroic gun-owning locals didn't stop and shoot the perpetrator before he carried out this horrific attack? I mean, Texas has one of the highest percentages of gun ownership per capita of any US state (if not THE highest), so I would think that one of its responsible, gun-owning citizens would have sprung to the rescue. scipioafricanus do you live in Texas? You're a gun owner, aren't you? Would you have shot that teenage gunman dead-in-his-tracks if you had been there? I just don't understand why none of your fellow 2nd amendment texan supporters did anything here to help save all those people from being gunned down.

Remember, this is your thing, not mine. I don't own a gun, so I'm not capable of shooting anybody, including myself. But that doesn't stop conservatives like you from looking for excuses to throw me in prison to prevent me from being allowed to buy a firearm that I never had any intention of buying, does it? Oh, and bonus question: should I feel ashamed of myself for being mentally ill? Is mental illness just a myth and in actuality god creates everyone equally? Don't leave me hanging!
