Of course you hate progress. Like the video said, it's going to cut travel time in half. That's literally an improvement of a factor of a 100%. This isn't progress. This is just another case of first world society catering to the automotive industry and car-worshiping upper class socialite scumbags at our planet's expense. Aren't we supposed to be reducing our carbon footprint and our construction? You know what real progress would be? Norway ferrying people across waters on electric blimps instead of building massive floating underwater concrete tunnels that will require constant expense maintenance, could fail the moment a natural disaster strikes (also, rising sea levels anyone?), and will balloon Norway's annual carbon emissions. These tunnels aren't necessary at all. Boats can carry cargo and blimps can carry people across water with minimal impact on the environment compared to this. Norway has one of the highest percentages of EVs of any country, so it's not like it's only going to be gasoline cars driving in them. What's progress to you dude? If we destroyed all roads so that people could only walk, would that be progress to you?

There is nothing that I enjoy less than driving. It riddles me with anxiety and terror, but it is absolutely necessary for survival. But I'm glad that I know how, because I would feel woefully inadequate if I didn't. Our country is designed around the car, and the car helped to destroy the rail-car and the train, which were excellent forms of transportation.
If you are a rural American, like I am, you need a car in order to live. The nearest grocery store is a ninety minute walk from my house. Communities like mine have few quality, high paying jobs. Most of them went away fifty years ago, and the only decent employer is the State Prison. The car is the only hope for people like me, who wish to find a better life.
Busses and uber are not profitable in rural areas. Very few routes are available. Only a state owned or state subsidized mass transportation system could serve to minimize the life-crushing dominance of the car in the lives of so many rural people, just like what happened with electricity in the 1930s.

Nice write up. Indeed driving has been with us since ancient Greece with those chariots.
I find fascinating how people would drive early on:
Both drivers and walkers had virtualy no rules, so you get to seee miracles happening at a moment to moment basis, and makes you wonder why people didn't get hit more often.

Either we all adopt ZCE lifestyles or all life on earth (including humans) goes extinct. Take your pick. As for roads, they do serve their purpose, but there are far too many of them and people are over reliant on them. Take the midwestern US for example. There is such an extensive network of highways and backroads here that habitat fragmentation is ubiquitous in literally every midwest state. All of the snake species and turtle species in my state have declined because of roadkill and habitat fragmentation. The midwest has one of the highest carbon footprints of any US region of land because of the amount of driving that people do. All of our towns are located at least several miles apart. The USA is so regressively structured that it's just outright horrifying. And the worst part is that nobody here cares about the environment or climate change. Even though we need to abandon all of our rural villages and isolated farmhouses to save the planet, nobody is willing to make that sacrifice because americans are greedy and materialistic as fuck.
