So I'm thinking of moving on from my Wii, I want something with better multiplayer games and the 360 and ps3 are my options.
Which is people's preferred option?
For me, I'm leaning towards the Sony machine, I've had the previous iterations of the PlayStation systems and I have the appropriate av cables for it (I dont own a HD TV)

Multiplayyer isn't something to look forward to on aging consoles.

Granted, but spending £500 on a TV, console and games isn't a prospect I fancy.

Well at least you're not aiming for an 8th gen console, as all those only support HDTVs. From a gaming perspective, i would say get a PS3, huge library of games spanning 3 generations, lots of exclusives depending on your taste.

Multiplayyer isn't something to look forward to on aging consoles. That said, why don't you go for PC or wait for the actual next gen systems to come?

PC gets recommended to me often, but it's far out of what I can afford.

So I take it you need just a system right now for a budget? I'd probably go with the ps3. The third party support for it lasted a lot longer then the 360's did so more to choose from 3rd party wise. I also have some games for it that have a split screen option although not every game out there has that. However The 6th gen consoles have games that have split screen and almost every one of them does or the majority of them do. Some jrpg games I have even have local multiplayer. I don't know how many people actually do that anymore though but I try and set that up once in a while with my friend. When his car is running right of course.
There's some 360 games that have more content on the ps3. Some updated versions of games. You can also play imports on the ps3 while you can't on the 360.

I would just stay with the Wii. The PS3 is my favorite game system but the library is so big that at this point it can be a little too overwhelming for a newcomer. Also the Dualshock 4 is so good that it's a little upsetting it wasn't available for that generation.

^You can use the PS4 controller on the PS3. How many more times must we go over this?

I know it works, I use it, but the rumble and the first party software compatibility are missing, and those 2 are kind of like a big deal to me, specially the Sony exclusives part.
The Dualshock 4 is still solid for the other titles, and honestly the Dualshock 3 was not bad at all, it was one of the best things we had until the Dualshock 4 came out.

Actually PC might still be something to consider. For last gen games you don't need anything great, I run games on a cheap dell laptop and it works alright. The PC you're using now could probably handle a good amount of games. I guess if you want a console though, I'd recommend the ps3 if you don't still have those earlier playstations, but otherwise I'd go with the 360.

yar2084 There's a lot to recommend both systems. Both have large libraries that would take years to play through. I would strongly encourage you to take a look at both systems' exclusive titles and see what appeals to you. For example, I really like JRPGs, and while the 360 does have a few very decent ones, the PS3 library appeals to be more overall. There are other things that largely come down to taste. I prefer the PS3 on-screen interface and controller to the 360 counterparts, for example, but I still own and play both systems.

Both consoles are excellent choices, and since the price is about the same we must look into the other differences. I always tought that Xbox had the best multiplayer exclusives while the PS3 had more singleplayer exclusives. Also the 360 had generally better looking 3rd party games since a lot of developers simply ported the 360 version of their games to the PS3. I would go for the 360, but that's just my personal opinion, and I am going to get a PS3 down the road anyways. So it's really up to what games you would like to play.

Thanks for all the replies guys, it's appreciated. I'm leaning more towards the Sony machine, for no other reason than I'm a little biased and I DON'T have to pay a fee to play online. That said, I imagine I would be happy with either, all I want is to be to play online games like CoD or Battlefield, and any others tbh that people may recommend.
