Microsoft used Nvidia for their original Xbox graphics and ATI for the 360. That is why they need to use emulation, because they had to reverse engineer the Nvidia technology. Some games were more troublesome than others, and by the time they reached where they were with making them backwards compatible, the Xbox 360 library had already sustained itself and the technology was there to just have people download the game to their 360 as a DLC title. So that is why Microsoft stopped.
On the other hand, Sony basically built a PS2 into every PS3 early on. As a cost-saving measure, they removed this after the original models and switched to emulation, which apparently worked for around 85-90% of titles. But the Sony realized, much like Microsoft, they could make a lot more money re-selling you what you already own as a downloadable title. So they actually REMOVED the Emulation features from the PS3.
As bad as Microsoft might have been for never finishing the games, I would say that Sony did even worse by removing the emulation from later revisions of the PS3, as it only serves to line their pockets by selling you the same title a second time.
Personally, I use my PS3 more as a Blu-Ray and Netflix device than a game system. When I would play the more modern consoles regularly, I’d go for Xbox 360. That system seems easier to just jump into a play. And let me tell you, it seems that the PS3 takes an eternity to update anything, while the 360 is almost instantaneous.
I boot up the system and try to connect online. Now I need to update the PS3. Then I need to let it install. Want to play a game? Now the game needs to install to the PS3. What? There is a mandatory patch I need to download? Guess I better do that, because I can’t seem to start the game without it. Hold up… to go online with the game, I need to download and install another update? Why wasn’t this update with the patch I just downloaded? Ugggggghhhhh….
The 360 is not without its fault either. Games are tied to certain systems and all Indie titles require you to log in online before you can start them. Meaning that any Indie games you buy will ultimately be unplayable when XBL goes down or your connection is down or they simply decide to shut the service down on the system.
On the positive side, you can manually update your PS3 with a 1tb laptop hard drive for extra storage space. On the downside, the PS3 eats up 10% of your hard drive, no matter what size, devoting it to completely blank space. So if you DO get a 1tb drive, 100gb+ are unusable by default. On the 360, after 9 years, Microsoft FINALLY released an update to allow people to hook up an external HD up to 2tb. So, there is that too.
On the 360, Halo Reach was my default game for it’s online. On the PS3, Warhawk devoured all my time. Warhawk never gets it’s dues, but be damned if that wasn’t fun for the 3 or 4 years I played it regularly. The Xbox 360 has Halo and Gears of War. The PS3 has pretty much everything from the PS2 plus a lot more. Early on, the 360 had all the exclusives, but that fizzled a few years after the PS3 launched and Sony has far more franchises that are made internally than Microsoft has.

Balder I got Heavy Rain, also picked up Street Fighter IV and Armored Core V If you like Armored Core V, be sure to pick up Armored Core 4 Answer and Verdict Day before they both skyrocket in price. Armored Core 4A is probably the best mech game to date Luckily the PVP is still active in those games i mentioned.

spooie - Wow, I never had consider the change from NVidia to ATI as the reason for the shoddy 360's backwards compatibility. It makes A LOT of sense. Also, I didn't know Sony had implemented an emulation workaround and then taken it off. That looks like a very shitty thing to do to your fans. At least Microsoft kept their emulation, as limited as it is (that was how I played awesome games like Phantom Dust, Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta and JSRF).

At least Microsoft kept their emulation, as limited as it is (that was how I played awesome games like Phantom Dust, Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta and JSRF). There was a point in 2005 when no Microsoft consoles were actually in production for a while, because the license was ending on the Nvidia end and Microsoft already had the Xbox 360 planned out with ATI, so they stopped manufacturing the Xbox rather than extending the contract with them. Of course, ATI was bought out by AMD, who now makes the Xbox One, so they have access to the technology of the graphics on the 360... meaning that one day, the Xbox One actually may live up to the promise of having all Xbox 360 games forward compatible. Even though it's only around 50% and there are graphical issues with them, as long as you have a Microsoft-brand hard drive in your 360, you are able to play the original Xbox games on it. Be it the original, Model S or Model E version of the system. Regarding Sony... yep... completely took it out. Of course, even Nintendo took the Gamecube backwards compatibility out of the Wii Mini. Hell, they took EVERYTHING out of the Wii Mini. In fact, let's never mention the Wii Mini again.

Yeah, the Wii Mini was pretty awful. Looks like a Nerf doorstop. Has zero online functionality so you couldn't play your games online, stream your netflix or play your DLC games. No Gamecube backwards compatibility, including Gamecube controller support. No Component-out video or even S-video, so you get video that is just slightly above coaxial.

No Gamecube backwards compatibility, including Gamecube controller support. No Component-out video or even S-video, so you get video that is just slightly above coaxial. As an owner of the Wii mini (don't forget not to capitalize the m) and a Gamecube, the downgrades don't pester me to the same extent they did when I first had the console. Considering as the online was getting phased out (I kind of like that the online functionality isn't there so I'm not encouraged to buy digital software), it made sense to make the console less capable and besides, there is a massive physical Wii library to choose from (marketed for the Wii mini as more than 1300 titles) and Gamecube consoles are cheap enough to acquire (got mine for less than the seller's shipping cost!). There is a special kind of adapter available to use the Gamecube controller on the console but you'd have to ask Imperial Khador about that one as I haven't felt so compelled to acquire one, however, don't neglect the fact that it still works with the classic controller and classic controller pro. One appreciable fact is that the console doesn't use an optic drive (is that what it's called?) like the standard Wii models so it has less a chance of malfunctioning or overheating as several have been reported to do. There are some downsides namely the fact that it is a bit noisy while running (although no noisier than the Dreamcast) and that as soon as you pop the top, the disc stops spinning thus risking scratches but as long as you remember not to pop too soon, your discs should be fine. Also, the negative reception made those consoles really cheap to acquire -- Game Stop only offers me 20 dollars for the console complete with the snazzy red Wii Motion Plus controller which alone sells upwards of 20 dollars online! The key premise behind its marketing was that it came out when the Wii U was selling for $349.99 (I believe) and that bundled with the classic Mario Kart Wii, it was only $99.99, plus Club Nintendo owners could reap an added benefit of bonus big-N 'line street cred. I used to think buying the console was a mistake but not when I realized all the greats I was missing out on for the console including Chaos Field and Geometry Wars as well as many of the first party greats. It's not my favorite console on principle alone but I do stand firm behind the innovations of the Wii control scheme and how they Revolution-ized certain games for the better and if Wii mini is one's vehicle to experience said innovation, then so be it.
