In a world of feelings, selfishness, and whining, this movie came out to bring in the era of manly movies. To me, this is not only the perfect cobretti movie, but it also a perfect coming of age movie for strong men AND women. William Wallace's story may be altered a bit in this film, but the film should be mandatory viewing for all teenagers who love freedom. It truly teaches one what true bravery is. Wallace's parents are brutally murdered by a totalitarian state, his uncle raises him how to be a man, he gets married to a beautiful woman, and that totalitarian state tries to take out his people with an early form of eugenics. When he fights for his right to freedom, his wife is murdered; thus his war for rectifying vengeance while obliterating tyranny begins. Not only would he have won, but he scored the hot French chick too. Unfortunately, the bastards of the political realm interfered in the end. It was his valiant (and horrific) death that ultimately led to the unification of his people in a war to liberate his people from the bonds of evil.
What a fantastic film. To me, it is one of Mel Gibson's finest. 5/5

It's been some years since I saw Braveheart, but I never really understood why it's so perfect. Sure it's good, but a masterpiece? I can't pinpoint why I don't think it's so great, as it's been too long since I last saw it, but I think I would've given this a 3.5/5. One thing I'll say though, there aren't that many historical epics being made anymore. There were so many of them in the 90's.

To me, this is not only the perfect cobretti movie There's no Arnold or Stallone in this one, though. Let's see if cobretti has a kind heart to forgive this severe flaw.

I remember liking this movie when I was a kid, but that is all I remember. I definitely need to watch it again. This movie is one of the most popular movies in Hollywood, it would not surprise me if they come up with a remake one of these days.

My opinion is that this is a 5/5, especially when it was released, as there weren't many movies that represented realistic medieval life and battles like it. It takes, of course, some artistic license with History, but all in the name of making William Wallace a true badass, the kind of manly character that Mel Gibson was great at in the 90s. The scale of the battles and grandiose of every speech made this a true epic - unlike, let's say, 300, which is too much style over substance. It really felt like every battle was justified and the fight for freedom was an urgency.
I've watched it so long ago that I think the last time was still on VHS or on tv. I'll look for it this week.

unlike, let's say, 300, which is too much style over substance I still love the first 300 because the style is something I definitely value, plus it has an anal sex scene with the Queen too. I feel 300 is more in line with 50s epics that also gave importance to style. From what I remember Braveheart didn't have a lot of style, just like Conan didn't, but they still deal with topics we love and that gives them the 10 out of 10 status they usually carry, not to mention the outstanding cast.

I'm sorry, but the lack of historical accuracy stops me from giving this full marks. Still kick arse though.

Don't forget William Wallace also had an heir to the throne at the end.

Mel Gibson is a self-indulgent phony just like all the other celebrities in Hollywood, not to mention an abusive lunatic too. I was pleased when he got banned from Hollywood after that public meltdown he had eons ago but it seems like he's made his way back into the entertainment industry again in recent years. Shame.
