Just the most prominent examples from each era most people would be familiar with. Gen 7 gets a place cause despite being 'modern', it's still already kinda in the past...
I'm in for Gen 6 (although I hate that number) - Most advanced era of the old before all the modern networks and rampant digital nonsense... The best balance between old & new with more games anyone can play in a lifetime (or two...), and many a genre masterpiece that still spawn remasters to this day.
(Actually, this is my 79th post and I just wanted to try out the poll function to mark the milestone...)

There is a reason 6th gen games still get released to this day. There was No patches, no dlc scams, no digital downloads, the ability to link up a portable system (gameboy player with a gameboy advance), every game was complete out of the box not having to have half a game then buy the rest somewhere else, actual manuals, not having parts of the game cut out or removed, and lastly local multiplayer with a bit of online which the online play was optional.

I'll go with 5th Gen, mostly because it marks the highest point in 2d games, with beautiful pixel art and lots of stuff going on (think of Metal Slug or all the awesome 2d Saturn releases, like Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes etc.), a very experimental 3d phase (with games like Nights) and games that defined genres and series and are considered some of the best games ever made (Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2, Super Mario 64, Castlevania SotN, Panzer Dragoon Saga etc.).
The 6th gen certainly perfected the 3d genres, but it also mostly abandoned 2d, so I don't think of it as fondly as the 5th.

6th gen bruh. RE Outbreak was my jam back then, qas imagining how the online would function, built a lot of hype, 10 years later i tried it, it did not disappoint.

I liked the 7th gen. I was able to play the best Japanese arcade games running as good as the arcades, and with more added content, in one single machine.
They almost released the entire Taito Type X2 and Sega RingEdge 2 collections, and I was able to get all of those.
Also the racing scene was outstanding, and we even got some cool shooters on rails as well. I also appreciate Sports Champions 2 and Zen Pinball 2.
Online gaming was free, and they released many cool modern version of all time classics like Defender, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Galaga, Sonic The Hedgehog, Contra, 1942, Bionic Comando, Mega Man, Strider, Rush 'N Attack, Texder, you name it.
Plus in one console I was able to enjoy some of the best titles from previous gens with all the classics they re-released in HD, in 3D, and in easy access digital form. Also the built quality of the peripherals was the best in history too, only missing the beautiful 8th gen pad with rumble.

I vote 5th gen. Sure there was a shitload of shovelware but there was also a lot of experimentation going on there. Plus, cinematic platformers seem to have died for the most part in that gen

6th gen for me, followed by 4th gen, and then 5th gen (and I totally agree with Cervantes that the 5th gen produced some really creative and unique 3D games. Too bad all the controllers during that gen sucked major balls for playing 3D games with lol). Those three gens together form the triforce of awesomeness.

Gen 6 was the peak for gaming, the improved hardware allowed for great games to be made but the industry hadn't yet created all the problems the industry has now

Wii/360/Ps3 generation without doubt! It's a key gen for me because I finally got to play games from many other generations that were given space again on Ps3 and 360, notably Darkstalkers and D&D, which can't be obtained for other consoles in the west. In addition, lots of life lecturing games happened this gen such as flower, Folklore, and Deception*.
*I didn't know how to use the iron horse before.
Btw, can we even call the Ps4/WiiU/XbOne 7th gen? Aren't they just fake 7th gen placeholding for the actual 7th gen systems?

I voted for the last option because I don't have a favorite gen and have been still enjoying current gaming. 3rd gen and on were all great in their own ways for me. I need to play more from gen 2, have a bit more of an interest in that lately.

I'm going to have to go 6th. The modern style of games were becoming true masterpieces at that point. Innovation was overflowing, from the dreamcast's graphical and online capabilities to the ps2's backwards compatibility. I think thefurox summed it up pretty well.

Wow, no votes for the 3rd? Interesting. I think it would be my second choice, although I would be torn between it and the 4th. The 4th has more elaborate games (think of Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Sonic, Street Fighter 2 etc.), but then, the 3rd originated a lot of great series that are still alive (Mega Man, Zelda, Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Metroid etc.).
