I don't know if any of you keep up with what's happening down under, but half of the country has been burning. It's been happening in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. I've heard old firefighters on news radio saying they, in all their lives, have seen nothing like this! It's not so bad now, but the cities and beyond had been cloaked in this smoke haze. You look to the west and there is this brown tint in the sky. And some people have been having respiratory problems, like my landlady. Oh yeah, the government had been cutting the firefighting budget that could have prevented this from happening. #BerejiklianBushfires Queensland Country Life7 NewsIndependent AustraliaSouth BurnettYahoo (has a map) Because WHat COUld PossiblY GO WROng?! What's worse this has come late in an election year. If this happened last year, we wouldn't have waited long to vote them out! I have this fear that drought and fire have knocked out a lot of our crops and food may be more expensive in the future. Farmers would have lost their livelihoods and make us more dependent on imported food. So I've decided I'm going to starting growing some veggies and see what I can do to preserve water. I even thought of signing up to the fire service to help but, what good would that have done anyway with the budget cuts? So, I ask if anyone's got some spare cash, could they give some donations. Surely, your shekels/euros/$US must be worth something. But who the fuck cares?! It's going to be obsolete in 2 years anyway and that money mgiht be better spent on food! So, yeah. I'm a little depressed. Otherwise, I'm fine. Thanks for asking.

My sympathises, sir. Hopefully your crop growing season can be salvaged, since spring isn't over yet. I really hope your politicians figure it out, so you don't start feeling like California. The pink hue at night is really creepy during the fire season. How is your neighborhood? Has the air quality improved at all? Hopefully your home wasn't in danger.

I live in a coastal region, but I have a brother and his wife who live further inland and I can imagine their town being cloaked in smoke. I drove up there a couple of months back and the terrain was brown. Australia has always been a hot country and there have always been fires in some part of the country, toward the end of the year. It really felt like the Apocalypse was just on the other side of town, coming to sweep you up in a matter of hours. Every 5 to 10 years, there has been a natural disaster of some kind. There was the Black Saturday fires in Victoria and floods in 2010 and 2011. With the drought we're having, I'm beginning to miss the relentless rain from back then. You know, between leasing land to mining giants like Adani, the Murray Darling scandal involving cotton farmers taking more than their fair share of water and foreign land ownership, it seems like it's more of a corporation than a country and everyone's buying shares off it, people and land be damned!

Just buy a car with a V8 in it and legally change your name to Maximilian Rockatansky and you'll be fine.

I heard a news report recently that 2019's summer is the hottest on record in Australia. Is this true? Are you feeling the heat, Centipede?

It doesn't feel any hotter than usual, but these fires are not normal. I've also heard of cities, like Adelaide, being hotter because of the heat blowing in from outback. One park ranger quite, due to cutbacks, because he had to look after an area the size of Tasmania, which itself has more rangers looking over it.
Of course, the blame game is on. The Greens Party are being accused of blocking farmers' rights to clear land of trees, which allowed for more combustible foilage fuel to litter the ground, while the Liberal National Party, currently in government, have been accused of giving them too much power to clear land, thus meaning more trees were bulldozed and causing the climate to go over its naturally regulated temperature.
Look up a guy on YT called FriendlyJordies. He's got a lot to say about the current situation. You'd like him, but I don't agree with every single thing he says.
And I still worry for the future of my country.

I feel you man, California has been always burning on fire.
Ironically, I have been trapped in my house because of the snow.
My car is actually stuck. I'm almost running out of food too. Luckily, I can still walk to store if I need to because it is not too far away, but it is too damn cold outside, so I keep leaving it for later.
At some point I will have to do it though, I think I can easily last another 3 days like this.
I can't imagine what is like to live in the upside down side of the world, but I'm sure it would feel strange to have Summer in January.

And I still worry for the future of my country. Slightly off topic but let me just say that I'm getting bad vibes from your current PM, Scott Morrison. I remember seeing a news report a while back where he blasted a group of vegans publicly protesting against the cattle industry and denounced them as "phony aussies who are violating the great traditions of Australia", or something along those lines (it was a while back when I read this report and I didn't save the link). He seems like a very regressive-minded politician and I'm just going to go out on a limb of a charred red river gum and say that I'm against him. It's probably safe to assume that the government cutbacks are due to his politics?

Spirit Bomb 'ScoMo' is just a face of the LNP, not the head. The LNP have always favoured the big end of town, including those from the big ends of more foreign towns (if you get my meaning). And don't forget that politicians are usually full of fluff, like atheist former PM Julia Gilliard going to church. The older generations, like my mother are easily convinced, but my generation are not so trusting! Julia Gilliard also introduced the great tradition of Prime Ministerial coups when the Labour Party (who are in league with The Greens) knifed Kevin "'07" Rudd in the back. Parliament is a circus and it's not a funny one.

Just buy a car with a V8 in it and legally change your name to Maximilian Rockatansky and you'll be fine. Yeah, I could invest in a bug-out van, but what about a boat? I could just fish and find a spot of land to desalinate my water via a solar distiller in the ground. stratogustav At least you have plenty of moisture! dschult3 Where I'm at is no longer getting that smoke haze, but you should see what's happening further south. The sky is red!

centipede, I require my class to watch CNN 10 everyday, and they have been covering the fires quite a bit. I heard there was rain over the last few days. Has it gotten any better?

Australia's a big country. There isn't just an 'over there', but there are some rain clouds over Brisbane right now. I hope they move west and generate while they do. It's still pretty bad down in Victoria. Here's an ABC article if you're interested.
Quotes: The heavens have reluctantly opened, bringing a few millimetres of rain to the scorched south-east, but authorities say it can actually hinder their efforts to fight bushfires. Greg Allen, spokesperson for New South Wales Rural Fire Service, said while the cooler conditions were welcome, rain was not a good thing in all cases. "It can hamper efforts to put in back-burning, those tactical firefighting operations that we use at times to strengthen containment lines," he said.

The broadcast said it rained for the last two days in the country, so I wasn't too sure if it was the whole country or part of it. I did some fire control training in North Carolina during the fire season in the south east in the early 2000s, and they talked about how bad the sludge could be after a rain due to the ash mixing with the water. My friends in California said it can be like an avalanche when it goes down hill. I hope it isn't that bad for you.

It's good to see a few from Hollywood take notice, and lend a hand. I hope it all goes in the right places, though. Because its going to take bloody decades to regenerate this country.
