A few days ago my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is going in for massive surgery on monday (may 4th).
It's already been a very stressful time for me over a longer time, with renovations to my apartment during the second half of last year, my own health issues, problems with youth-related criminal activity in my local area that I've had to deal with on several occasions, and now this.
And of course on top of it all the corona pandemic now makes going in for massive surgery like this even more risky than usual, and it further complicates things so I can't go see her at the hospital afterwards either. She's in her late 60s so she's close to the high risk age group for corona, so it definitely adds an extra layer of worry.
During all of this my online activity has been at an all-time low, aside from basic stufflike checking my email and other passive things I've taken the time to make a new Handheld Wars thread each week, that's about it.
If she makes it through and there aren't any complications I'll keep doing what I do, if not, I most likely will need some time to deal with things, not just emotionally but with funeral arrangements and whatever else needs taken care of.
On the positive side, it was diagnosed early enough for surgery to be an option, and she's positive and hopeful. I feel more lost, worried and overwhelmed than anything else right now.

You are family man, so it is very hard to hear you are going through this. I'll keep you and your mom in my prayers.

Dealing with cancer is never easy, let alone when it is with a parent. Be there for her and be strong of her. We will be here for you.

My condolences man, hope everything turns out well for you. It may seem like everything is going to hell for you now in life, and that shit's unfair. And even if things takes a turn for the worse, just remember that it'll get better at some point. Like Scipio said, be there for your mom, and we'll be here for when you feel like coming back. Don't worry about not being able to post an6u weekly threads or whatever because people here haven't crucified me (yet). Best of luck.

You've gone through a lot of shit these past few years, I hope things start to look up for you. It's a good call to start focusing more on yourself and your family.

Sorry to hear that, and all the best. Hopefully the surgery goes well.
I lost my father back in December and had to semi-shut down for a few months. I hope things work out for the best and you'll get to have many more happy memories with your mom.

Pancreatic cancer? Yikes, that's not good. Prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually quite low compared to other forms of cancer (from what I understand), so it makes sense that you'd be so shaken up by this.
You're one of the very few posters here who I genuinely respect, so it will be a shame for you to take a hiatus from these boards. But I totally understand why you need to step away from a while, so definitely don't feel pressured or obligated to post here for right now. As someone who lost a father to cancer I know how difficult the emotionally struggle is. I wish the best for your mom and hope she overcomes this.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. In the last few years, my family and friends have had to deal with quite a bit of cancer and other diseases. Words can sometimes feel hollow when the world is collapsing around you. I just hope to encourage you and your family. Around here, our favorite poem is used to encourage each other. My own personal mantra is Dylan Thomas' Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers on Monday.

On the positive side, it was diagnosed early enough for surgery to be an option, and she's positive and hopeful. That's good, it's important to know that she is positive and that there is available treatment. As everyone else, I'll also be cheering for you both, I hope everything goes well.

What a bad time to need surgery! But if the medical system knows what it's doing up there in Sweden, she should be okay.
I can relate to having old parents with health problems. In the 00's, my dad seemed to have one health scare after another. And on my birthday last year, I had to rush my mum to hospital after she had chest trouble. It's not a nice feeling, worrying about their health all the time.
Here's something: when I went in for some surgery, I had them bring me some healthy blended drinks that helped me recover. Stuff like avocado and tomato, lemon and ginger. When she's recovering, bring her some healthy stuff like that and some extra Vitamin C will help her fight off infection.

She'll be getting a so called Pancreaticoduodenectomy, also known as a Whipple procedure. When she was diagnosed the doctors prescribed her a big box full of different fruit mix vitamin drinks to help her body prepare for the surgery, but due to what kind of surgery this is her diet will be very specific afterwards and I'm sure they've already worked out exactly what she gets to eat and drink, the amount and how often. Due to the corona virus she'll be kept in quarantine during the entire recovery period, so I won't be able to visit her in person. She has her smartphone with her, and I think she may also bring a surf tablet, so hopefully we'll be able to video chat, voice chat or at least text chat with no problem. I'll be asking about her diet and such things then, for sure.

I just got off the phone with the hospital. The surgery went well and she was awake now so I got to talk to her.

That is awesome, this comes as great news. I would still keep you in the prays for a couple more days for extra strength, but these are already really great news.
