This game alone makes me appreciate PlayChoice-10 cabinets. Honestly anything on that system is fantastic.

I absolutely love this game. I have the NES version (and currently scipioafricanus' 2600 version). The game is relatively simple, but highly addictive. I only play this game with another person, because the game can be either hyper competitive or friendly strategic. My son and I play this game on the Switch relatively frequently. We have gone as far as level 25 (ish...We don't write these things down.), but then it gets too hectic. We have created quite a few memories playing this together.
I started playing this game on the 2600 when I was a kid. It looks so outdated by today's standards, but the game actually works quite well. I had a lot of fun with it. As long as you aren't a graphics whore, and you know what you are getting into, it still can be quite a bit of fun. Oddly enough, though, I had never seen the arcade cabinet, until I went to Galloping Ghost. The graphics are one of a kind, and it is so odd that Nintendo refused to release an arcade port until 2017. The sprite animation for the arcade has that old school Nintendo charm of the early 80s that has gone by the wayside. If you get a chance to play the arcade game with a friend, I recommend it. As for the "near ports," it was fun playing the Luigi version in Super Mario 3D World. I also liked the goofy challenge version in Super Mario 3. On a display machine, I played Mario Clash on the Virtual Boy once or twice, and it was really cool. I'd love to play that again, but the 2 player cord was never released, so it wouldn't be as fun as it should be.

Absolutely, in fact when I had my Super Nintendo, my next door neighbor on the left had a Super Nintendo too, but the one on the right still had his original Nintendo, and he had this game.
I remember how we spend a lot of time playing this game at his house, and it never got old, we had a lot of fun playing it.
Coming from someone that already had experienced playing a lot of more complicated games, I still found the simplicity of the challenge in this game to be insanely rewarding.
Even till this day I still think the game is fantastic, and it definitely holds better than modern AAA games.
I also recommend the Luigi Bros. version found within Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U. They definitely need to port that to the Switch, and both Galaxy games.

I enjoy the original Mario Bros, and I think of the various single-screen arcade games from that era, it holds up pretty well. I think my first experience with it was a version on a childhood friend's old Apple computer. I think it was an Apple IIe, but I may have that impression because we were using those in the computer lab of my elementary school at the time. In any case, like all those games, everything was displayed in green and black. Each player controlled Mario or Luigi from a different side of the keyboard, if I recall correctly. By the time we were using it, we both had NESes, so it was more a novelty than anything. This would have been 1987 or 1998. We'd occasionally break this version of Mario Bros, or a few others. I remember something very similar to Lunar Lander, an Indiana Jones game that seemed like a puzzle-platformer we could never figure out, and kind of very basic beat 'em up. Mario Bros held up the best there too The next time I experienced a version of Mario Bros was the mini-game in Super Mario Bros 3 where you could battle the other player to steal their turn. I remember the same friend and I sometimes just doing that over and over again instead of getting around to the rest of SMB3. After the end of highschool around 1999-2000, I made some friends from another city who visit occasionally. Their parents had owned a video arcade long before I knew them, and still ran distribution business for other arcades, carnivals, etc. I had been to their warehouse a few times, which had a bunch of games available for free play, but the older games from the 80's, they kept in their basement at home (along with...Addams Family pinball). They had a sit-down cabinet for joust, a cabinet for Sinistar, Pac-Land, one of the vector-based Star Wars games, and a few others, but Mario Bros was there too. So I have good memories of playing it in their basement. I've encountered it in other places too, of course, with the most recent being the NES games available for Nintendo Online subscribers on the Switch. It isn't a game that I really crave, or go back to for more than a few minutes at a time when I see it somewhere, but those are my most prominent memories relating to Mario Bros. Edit: Good call dschult3 on the Luigi Bros version accessible via Super Mario 3D World. That was a fun bonus. I also like the "Super Luigi Bros" that was available on NES Remix 2 on the Wii U, which just a mirrored (ie right-scrolling) version of Super Mario Bros. I miss the Year of Luigi. We got some neat Luigi-related bonus content.

Like many other people here have chimed in, Mario Bros. has aged quite gracefully compared to a lot of its contemporaries. It's still highly playable and entertaining to this day, and playing it in co-op is such a treat. I've only played the 2600 version, but it's one of the titles I've played more than most on the console. It's challenging like most 2600 games, but there are difficulties here that are for the most part quite fair. It's one of the few titles you can consistently play for more than a couple of minutes at a time. I want to go back now and play this again. Solid game that is very close to being one the all time great games on the console. 4/5

Mario Bros Arcade/Atari was my favourite 2D Mario game for a long time and was one of the games I truly got to appreciate through Mark.

Mario Bros arcade > Super Mario Bros 1 As a kid, I would have argued with you. As an adult who has seen the evolution of gaming, I now agree with you. SMB 1 just isn't as fun to play anymore when compared to MB.

I was burnt out on Super Mario Bros 1 even back in the day and I would argue that it's the least fun out of all the games in the franchise. Where as Mario Bros Arcade is timeless due to its nature and one of the most fun games of its era.

I hate to disagree with you guys, I understand your point of view, but Super Mario Bros. 1 is still my favorite game after Super Mario World, I like it even more than Super Mario Bro. 3, and I know Super Mario Bros. 3 is better.
Super Mario Bros. 1 is just too perfect for me, and honestly the VS. version on the Switch is maybe even more outstanding than the original. The original Mario Bros. is great too though, I still give it a 10 just like Donkey Kong.
