Doom rules! What a great choice. I think this was the first game that actually gave me a jump scare. Doom I & 2 are awesome. Doom 64 was cool, but too dark. Doom 3 sucked. The new one looks awesome, but I have yet to give it a shot. Did you guys ever play the multiplayer using a LAN connection? I remember playing the multiplayer of this and the original Grand Theft Auto in a computer lab and thinking that gaming couldn't get any better than that.

I think I'm the only guy that digs Doom 3.
Am I crazy, or do the 360 ports of Doom and Doom II seem to run slow? For some reason o have more fun playing Doom and Final Doom on PlayStation.

Armored Core Raven They had a Special Edition for the 360 as well? I never imagined playing Quake 2 on it. Come to think of it, how is it that you got Doom 1 and 2 and Quake Arena Arcade on XBLA but not the original Quakes? As for Quake 4, they were obviously trying to get with the times, but ironically flopped because of that. Because the traditional FPS model (kill, find secret door, kill, exit) is gone and replaced with more cut scenes, sort of more tactical military style gameplay in order to make it feel more authentic.

Balder anyone not playing the new Doom is a sinner. It is so good, almost as good as the newer Wolfenstein games

Falcula18 I haven't play it myself but knowing Balder I'm sure he'll like it. He is so close to get all the achievements for The Old Blood and The New Order. I know this because I can see his Xbox account.

I think by today's standards, doom is just "good". I say that because while the gameplay is still fun and responsive (depending of course on what port of it you're playing), it's very simplistic and can't hold my interest for long periods of time. And while I absolutely love the game's level design and premise, I think the often goofy rock soundtrack sillys-up the game's hellish tone and atmosphere. And while a lot of the early enemy sprites are outstanding and frightening in their design, some of the later enemies' designs are lame and even downright uninspired, not counting the end bosses (a flaming skull? A giant floating eyeball? Wow, that's so scary! Pfff, what laziness). But overall I still really admire the game for refining the first person shooter genre and delivering some good scares. And hey, it will always be better than Wolfenstien 3D. Talk about a big step in the right direction.
I haven't any of the later DOOM games, so I can't comment on those.

I had never played Doom (weird) either so I decided to give it a go and played the first couple of episodes. It's quite good, however it does have some annoyances, okay, just a couple of them. First there is the level design, I REALLY want to try whatever John Romero was on when designing the levels of this game, they're absolutely non-sensical and yet the levels are quite short with most of the levels being ~5 minutes long in my first playthrough. And secondly the controls haven't aged that well, and neither has the performance of the game as a whole. After starting it I spent about 20 minutes getting to run the game without flaws on DoSBox as I had constant frame drops, the music kept glitching, the graphics behaved wildly and full-screen was completely out of the question. Otherwise, it's pretty solid. The game has a nice difficulty progression where there are less and less weapon-wielding enemies as the game goes on and without them there are also less bullets, forcing you to think about different strategies and manage the ammo in your weapons efficiently. It also contains a good variety of enemies and exploration is heavily encouraged as heavy weapons are extremely rare to find in the wild. I give it a contrarian 4. I never played any of the Doom games, but the new Doom looks freaking awesome. Makes me want to play them all. I recommend getting any complete version of doom running on DOSbox (Gog, Steam, whatever) and then install ZDoom on the same directory of the game, you can find it here: www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/ports/?platform=2This will allow you to rebind your keys with a convinient config file and will correct all the problems that I listed above

I don't know how many times and hours I spent trying to find all the secrets. To this day I haven't found all of them, and I remember "clicking" on every wall in certain levels trying to find a secret door. I played the 32X version so it probably wasn't included, BUT STILL!

To be fair, this is probably more of an emulation problem (DOSBox configuration) than a problem with the game itself. I don't remember having any performance troubles with it in the 90s, playing on hardware it was originally designed for, neither did I have any trouble running it on DOSBox a few years ago - hell, I even ran it on a Dingoo, one of those generic chinese portable-emulators. This one: Maybe your DOSBox wasn't properly configured?

stratogustav getting those last achievements are just not worth the time or effort. Playing it on the hardest difficulty and challenges are just too hard and the other is just boring. @falcula there's not enough time to play all recommended games, so you've gotto play some and leave behind others. Guilion I'll just get the Xbox 360 Doom 3 BFG edition that comes with both the original and the sequel.

Balder You are so close. I would do the boring one first then the challenging one. You are almost done with both games. One more than the other.

This one: Maybe your DOSBox wasn't properly configured? The game running like crap? That one is on me, I'm currently running a very fragile setup with a hybrid laptop. I literally have a full-sized graphics card plugged in where the mini wireless network card is supossed to be. Having to change the controllers because DOSbox is controlling the -y axis and moving the mouse forward causes the character to start walking forward? That one is on the game, I'm not the only one that had struggles with it or otherwise I wouldn't have found the solution so quickly, the game is just not designed to be played with an optical mouse and the 2D controls from Wolfenstein don't carry over very well in the 3D environments of DOOM where strifing is essential. I mean, just take a look at some of the fun Balder is willingly missing:

Guilion - Ah yes, the game wasn't designed to be played with a mouse at all. It definitely feels strange nowadays, so you may really need to mess around with the controls.
