I would like to hear some insights from you guys on why you think this happened, and how worthwhile really was the aftermath of Sega making that kind of decision.

32X vs Saturn (Sega of America vs Sega of Japan), not putting a DVD player in the Dreamcast, etc. Sega did it to themselves.

They only have themselves (Sega of Japan to be more exact) to blame.

How was this Microsoft's fault?

How was this Microsoft's fault? The only thing I can think of why one would think like that is simply because they entered the market and took the space Sega had called shotgun on previously. However Microsoft had their own right to do so, and Sega had to demonstrate why they deserved to keep that position. It is true Microsoft's financial power was overwhelming, but it is not an excuse for Sega, considering Sega had the advantages of expertise and brand recognition in the field.

I've read that Shenmue costed a fortune to produce and despite being the most popular game on the console, failed to replenish the correspondingly unrealistic deficit margin thereby playing a lead role in the demise of the beloved console. So to answer both questions, Sega's exit ticket from console development was caused largely due to their own ambitions alongside the competency of their competitors and whether it was worth it, well I guess that depends on how much you like Shenmue

The lackluster SCD/32X attachments, the surprise launch of the Saturn pissing off many 3rd party developers, no main Sonic game on Saturn either, probably more things I'm not thinking of off the top of my head. Sega really did a lot to damage themselves after the Genesis and even though the Dreamcast didn't tank it was not successful enough to save them from the hole they got themselves into.

If anything Microsoft helped them with Windows CE, but when Sega realized the inevitably truth; they started making games for Xbox (even though Sonic suffered some very bad games in their series).

Sony and Microsoft could afford to sell consoles at a loss, for a while anyway. They have other products in the marketplace at the time to make up for it. That wasn't the case for Sega. They had software and hardware, and that's it. They couldn't fall back on Sega Discman's like Sony or Sega Window's like Microsoft.

It is interesting because as of right now Nintendo has so much cash that they could buy Sony more than once if they want to, and that includes all their branches, music, PlayStation, movies, electronics, etc..
However Nintendo is still not even close to match Microsoft's monstrosous financial power. I wonder how this boost in financial freedom for Nintendo will translate into NX, if it does at all.

What I was once told, by someone on PSO2 who claimed their mother worked for Sega of America, that Microsoft knifed Sega in the back when Sega needed their help the most. Microsoft basically learned all they could from Sega about how to make their own console, then ditched them when they were done.

Nintendo has money in the bank, but it won't count for shit if they lose all their market share.

centipede - it's always fun to hear stories related to companies and games and even better when you can pin the blame back on the big, bad M. I can definitely see the resemblance between the Dreamcast and Xbox controllers.

Yeah they are pretty similar in design teddykongcountry. It's if MS continued the evolution. Sega and Xbox has always had the best controllers.
