I have the earliest (or one of the earliest) 360 models that have the detachable hard drive on the top of the system. My storage space is ridiculously small, something like only 10 GBs. I really want to upgrade it to a larger size. Is this possible?

Yes you can use an USB HDD and just connect it, but be careful not to store anything on it before hand since it will convert the HDD to another format thus deleting everything on it. Microsoft implementet this a couple of years ago.

Balder No. Do you mean a flash drive? Or an external hard drive?

Balder Have you done this before? It sounds like you know how to do it. I've done it with a flash drive, but I wouldn't think an external HDD would be any different. Just make sure it's empty and plug it in. The Xbox will do the work from that point.

Balder Awesome! This sounds like it'll be a piece of cake then. Thanks! I owe ya, big time. Hey, that reminds me of a question I wanted to ask you: if those official HDDs for the early Xbox 360 models can be detached, shouldn't I just be able to buy one of those on Ebay and plug it on top of my 360? Would it be compatible? Because that seems like an easier, cheaper solution.

But the negative is that you are limited to 250 GB since that's the biggest one. If you decide to go for an external HDD, the limit is 1TB I think. So just keep that in mind.

External drives are a pretty straight forward option. As Balder has confirmed, you can just buy a new official enclosure with a larger drive, but the limit there will be 250 GB. Alternately, the hard drive inside the old 360 casing is just a normal 2.5 in drive like you'd find in a laptop, or many other game systems. It doesn't look that difficult to disassemble, swap out for a larger drive and reassemble. Found an old guide with a cursory Google search. www.anandtech.com/show/1864/inside-microsoft-s-xbox-360/5

Then how do you explain this: www.ebay.com/itm/500GB-HDD-500G-External-Hard-Drive-Disk-for-Microsoft-XBOX-360-US-Stock-/401130194691?hash=item5d65390703:g:pykAAOSwQPlV~NrC? Also, are there any downsides to using a USB HDD for my 360? Like, will saving games and loading saved games take longer? AND, I have yet another question that I'm gonna toss out: can original Xbox games be burned (installed) onto Xbox 360s? Because my copy of GTA San Andreas is extremely scratched up and barely runs.

You're right. Looks like there were detachable hard drives sold in 320GB and 500GB sizes ( Wikipedia Xbox 360 Hard Drive Sizes). Doing a few google searches, it looks like there are only a few minor downsides to an external drive. You are limited to 2TB of space (which is pretty reasonable), and because it uses USB 2.0, reading from the external drive will be slower than the internal drive, but still faster than a game loading from a disc. According to this page ( Xbox 360 Support page about installing games), original Xbox games cannot be installed onto the 360. This may be different for a modded 360 of course. That said, I'm not sure this is the best place for the occasional hardware questions you have, Maestro. It was almost certainly be quicker to pop your question into google than ask the community here
