I think I'm going to try Final Fantasy X for the first time now. I lied. I played through DKC, since it was released for the Switch Online.

Finished up Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight. The experience was much the same as its Persona 3 counterpart. Pretty fun, and a nice break from longer or more story-intensive games.

Well, this post isn't about a game I have beaten, but rather a game my son just beat. He beat Lego City Undercover. This isn't the first game he beat, but this is the first open world game he has beaten. He has been playing it (between a myriad of other games...kids don't focus on one game anymore, and I just don't get it! Where's my nagging cane?) since he got it for his birthday in September. In the last month, I have been encouraging him to focus on an open world game, and I don't think he has ever been so proud of himself about beating a game!
By the way, I have watched a bit (and helped him with the puzzles), and I definitely think it was fun. I'd recommend it.

Finished what will probably be my last play through of Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the forseeable future. I finished on July 27th, one year after the game's release, with over 260 hours logged. I completed a playthrough of each of the four major routes (Black Eagles, Blue Lions, Golden Deer, and Church of Seiros) before all of the DLC came out. Once the last wave of DLC hit, I went back to play through the Cindered Shadows side-campaign. Then finally, I went back to go through the Black Eagles route again, this time recruiting and using the four Ashen Wolves characters from the DLC in the main story, and trying out the other new playable characters (Jeritza and Anna). There are few games I buy at full price, but I definitely got my money's worth with Three Houses. I like all the Fire Emblem games, but this is probably my favourite.

Finished Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
I has started this one about two years ago. Ori is a gorgeous Metroidvania with a very mystical, almost Studio Ghibli-like aesthetic. Most of Ori's are movement-based, and there aren't really bosses so much as elaborate escape sequences, where you must use all of the movement powers you've acquired. I remember being very frustrated with, but finishing the first escape sequence, but giving up on the second.
Finished the second escape sequence on my...second or third attempt this time, despite forgetting about a lot of the abilities, and then just had a ball with the rest of the game. I'm really glad I went back and completed it.

Finished The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero
Really good fan translation for this one from the Geofront team. I'm really looking forward to their localization patch for Trails to Azure, the direct sequel. I'm not sure if I'll play the first Trails of Cold Steel game in the meantime or not.

Finished up Pokemon Yellow on the 3DS. In all these years, I'd never played a Pokemon game, and it was nice to close that gap in my experiences.

Finished up Ys Chronicles Book I on the PC.
I had a really good time with this one. Aside from very briefly playing the SNES version of Ys III when I was younger, I have no personal experience with the series. Ys III was also not representative, since it was a side scroller, instead of the usual top-down 'bump to attack' mechanic Ys is known for.
I had a lot of fun. Initially I didn't like the method of bumping into enemies off-center to attack, but once I had actually purchased some weapons and armour, and my attacks got more effective, the pace of the game picked up considerably.
This is one of those games where a new weapon, or a level or two makes all the difference. When having trouble with the first boss, I went to see if I was missing something with attack patters only to find suggestions to "gain one more level and pick up the next available sword", and sure enough, he got shredded.
Most of the bosses were to figure out, and since you are likely to reach the main character's (Adol) max level by the time you take on the final tower, and the last few bosses, you still need to rely on memorizing patterns. The final boss was an exception to this, largely relying on luck even once his pattern is known. Fireballs hit you from all directions as he bounces around the screen, and pieces fall out of the arena where you stand whenever he takes damage, possibly causing an insta-kill if you're not fast enough, and reducing your movement area even if you live. It took me over a dozen attempts, but fortunately reloading just before him could be done in seconds.
Chronicles is the second remaster, done in 2009, but also includes the option to use visuals and audio from the earlier Complete remaster from 2001, or the audio from the original PC-8801 version. Further to that, you can play with a few different visual options. Full-screen would be close to the version re-leased for the PSP with life bar, etc overlayed onto the field, but you can also restrict gameplay to a window at the top of the screen, with Adol and enemy HP listed below, closer to the older Ys games. I opted for the latter, as I was playing this on a fairly large screen, and I found a smaller action field was easier to follow.
The visual presentation isn't amazing, but the job well enough. Sprites have a late 16-bit era, or early PS1 look. There are some animated cut scenes, and sometimes when you talk to people, it will take you into a full-screen window to display a portrait of the person Adol is speaking to. It does the job, but isn't eye popping.
The music however, is Fantastic. The original composers are listed as Yuzo Koshiro and Mieko Ishikawa and the Chronicles version lists Ryo Yonemitsu. ' mostly played with the Chronicles audio, and always found myself grooving along. Standout favourites are Reah's harmonica tune, and the electric guitar track used for most of the overworld, but the whole soundtrack was great.
Ys Books I & II are usually paired together on re-releases, so I do intend to finish Book II next. I imagine I'll enjoy it just as much.

Finished up Ys Chronicles Book II on the PC.
It was easy to see why books I and II have been packaged together on all the re-releases. After playing through both, Book I feels very much like a prologue. Book II is longer, takes you through different landscapes, etc.
The visuals are almost exactly like Book I, so reminiscent of a 32-bit era sprite-based JRPG. The music continues to be excellent, with a range going from haunting tracks for underground caves to great electric guitar tracks for areas featuring a lot of combat.
Ys II adds magic to the mix, with a ranged fire attack being necessary for some boss fights. The boss variety is great with huge, detailed sprites, and interesting patterns to learn. Some bosses are like running through a mini-bullet hell. Several bosses required a few retries, but nothing that bogged me down the way Book I's final boss did.

I finished Super Mario 64 on the Switch from the 3D All-Stars collection, all 120 stars. I got it this afternoon, and just couldn't stop playing. I guess you can say it is a relatively short game by today's standards, but it is still the perfect length for my taste.
I do miss the so long gay Bowser saying when you throw King Koopa to the bombs, now it only says bye bye, so it's kind of gay they did that.
I'm going to try Super Mario Sunshine next, that's a game I have never finished, and I haven't even gotten very far in the past, so it will feel like a brand new game to me after a few hours in.
Then I will do Super Mario Galaxy that I have finished before, but not 100%, and to be honest I don't even recall anything from it, so that one will feel fairly new to me in a way. I wonder if the controls will be any different considering it is a new platform, but I don't want to touch it until I'm done with Sunshine first.

@very cool. I'm at about 110 Stars at the moment. It was the last one I can more or less complete from memory. I expect Sunshine and Galaxy to take a lot longer, as I dip into them from time to time.
I think with Sunshine back on the GameCube I didn't end up getting all the shines originally....I remember hunting and doing levels over and over, and being 2-3 short, so probably secret ones. I don't even have that save file anymore, so we'll see how I manage this time.
Galaxy...I think my roommate and I did eventually get all the stars, including on the Luigi 2nd playthrough...I think I do have that save still. I should load it up and check. I know I didn't finish a few of the harder stars at the end of Galaxy 2.

Awesome, yeah, I only played Sunshine for like a couple hours before, so I didn't get to see much of the game. It will definitely feel like a new game to me.
Galaxy I didn't do the Luigi playthrough, so that's why I don't consider that game complete, and that was long time ago as well.
I still have Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 on my Wii, but now that this is HD, I don't know if I will be able to play those versions again.
By the way, I do have some OCD thing I do on Super Mario 64 which is that for the 100 coins stars I have to get all the 100 coins at exactly 100 coins.
If for some reason I get 101 or more, I have to start the level again before saving. It's just this weird thing I have to do to feel right with the game at the end. I just like to see all the levels at exactly 100 coins.

Mario 64 is terrific on the compilation. It just looks so good and plays so well with the controller support. I'm a big fan of 3D All Stars.
