What makes you feel that way? I've heard people say the inverse. I have played neither, to be honest. The tactical combat was as good as ever, but story/character/plotwise... Engage is an anniversary title, and wears that identity on its sleeve. Past main characters are present as 'Emblems' to be summoned, and that drives the main story. So I think because of that, the world an plot themselves are very shallow. Not that Fire Emblem games are super deep, but it feels to me like this one just does the bare minimum. By celebrating the series as a whole, it doesn't have much of an identity of its own, if that makes any sense. The character designs seem a little weak for the new one. I think the main character has one red eye, and one blue one, and the sides of his hair are the opposite. It's like something a 5th grader would come up with in the margins of their duotang with a red and blue pen.

I just beat Super Mario 3 for the billionth time, but this time with the hammer brother's suit. I've done that before now, but it is always fun to do. I'm always disappointed that Mario isn't wearing the suit in the end sequence. I've seen people beat the game with the frog suit. I don't know if I care that much to do it, but it is impressive.

Finished Skyward Sword HD on the Switch.
I'm not sure if I'll ever revisit this one again. I like the story, and parts of the game are pretty fun, but there is also a lot of repetitive tedium. When I first played through it on the Wii, I did a lot of the optional content, which was not the case this time. Even still, I feel like a lot of it really dragged on for me.

Finished up Star Ocean: Second Evolution for the PSP, played alternately on the Vita and the PSTV.
I missed some of the quality of life additions that First Departure R on the PS4 had, and the graphics were comparitively blurry due to being a PSP game, but overall I still enjoyed it. These early Star Oceans definitely had an encounter rate that was too high though. I still have one more 'good' Star Ocean game to replay, as after Till the End of Time, I believe they take a big quality dip.
Also, just a peeve about the first three entries...since those are the ones I've played. Real bait and switch right from the first entry, pitching the concept as 'instead of a standard fantasy world, think of this as Star Trek: The JRPG' and then almost immediately dumping you in generic fantasy worlds for most of the game and making sure all your tech breaks.

Finished up my replay of FFVII Remake a few weeks ago, including the Intergrade DLC a few weeks ago. This was a fun one to go back to after playing through the Crisis Core remaster. I'm looking forward to part 2 this winter (or more realistically, 6 months later when it's on sale).
Finished up Ys: Memories of Celceta last week as well. I enjoyed this one, though it was my first one of the more modern Ys formula, with switching between 3 characters. Jumping from Ys being a 10 hour to a 30-40 hour game is...a mixed bag, but mostly positive. The new characters are likable, and the combat remains engaging. I found there to be a definite case of 'just one more dungeon' syndrome near the end. If mapping out the world is one of the points of the game, and I'm at 95%+, I don't want another 3-4 dungeons thrown at me to extend the run time. Fantastic music as always.

Finished up Ys VI (though I am still working on Ys V). Very much enjoyed. Good music, and this era of the Ys games (Napishtim, Origins and Felghana) may be my favourte playstyle.

My son has been playing the Genesis Mini a lot more lately. He decided that he would complete games his old man hasn't, so he finished Sonic 1 and 2. He also beat Street Fighter 2 with Zangief today. I've beaten that game with a few characters on the SNES, but I've never seen Zangief's ending...
I was laughing my ass off. Gorbachev doing the squat dance with him? My son had no idea what that was referencing, and he had no clue as to why it was funny. What a riot.
He is currently trying to play through Ristar before he gets to Sonic CD.

Finished up Tears of the Kingdom's story, though I have a few side quests kicking around here. I suppose everything to be said about this game has been said already, so I'll just say that I really enjoyed the experience. Returning to this version of Hyrule after a few years was lovely, and I'm glad I gave myself a few months to savour it.

Pimpjira - I always assumed Flicky didn't have an ending, I thought it just kept repeating like most older arcade games. I've also finished Rygar a few months ago and was surprised at its ideas, considering it was among the first batch of NES games and before larger ROMs and more advanced chips. It was a bit janky, but nice nonetheless.

Did you play an overclocked version of the game? I can't remember how I did it years ago, but I remember the game was MUCH better that way. I always wanted to love the original, but I could never get over the 4 frames per second. I think that game would have been so much better with an FX2 chip.

Finished up Ys Seven on the PC.
Overall, I enjoyed it.
It was interesting playing it after Memories of Celceta, since that refined a lot of the forumulas that Seven introduced to the series. Character models, environments, etc were all a bit simpler. The gameplay was still fast-paced and fun though.
It did feel like there were a bit too many playable characters, so I'm glad Celceta paired that down a bit.
The final boss had a bit of a difficulty jump I did not expect or enjoy. I think part of the problem was that it wasn't an interesting difficulty jump...just damage sponges that had to be dealt with over and over to make the boss vulnerable. It was time consuming enough to become boring.
On to Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

I think part of the problem was that it wasn't an interesting difficulty jump...just damage sponges that had to be dealt with over and over to make the boss vulnerable. It was time consuming enough to become boring. That was the problem with bosses in general: in Seven, they all just take too much damage. I think that was, in part, to make up for the lack of a jump button and for having three characters, each with their own life bar. Instead of the fast skill based fights from VI-Felghana-Origin, they became wars of attrition. That's also why Seven started allowing the player to use potions during the fight. While things got progressively better in Celceta and VIII, I miss the style of the older games: by not having AI controlled partners, not allowing items and not having the flash guard you had to keep moving, learn the bosses patterns and how to counterattack them. At the same time, if a boss seemed too hard you could always grind for a bit to level up and try a slightly easier fight. It was a very fine-tuned system and I wish Falcom goes back to it someday.

The version I played through was not overclocked I streamed it with a friend through the NSO. We did do all of the game modes so it took a while. I have also played an overclocked version and it is nice.
