First time it ever occur to think about this. I honestly think it hasn't changed much, at least not since the 3D era started. Before 3D it was hard to tell what our taste really was as we had too many good games to really have to think about this stuff, particularly the popular ones. When 3D games started to come out, then you started to see the differences, and often times what was popular was no longer a good indicative, sometimes it was, but not as often as before.
Personally, I noticed right away that games made by Japanese corporations with Japanese based developers regardless of how Western the publisher was, were always light years ahead when it comes to the gameplay experience.
However I failed to recognize that experienced Western developers were just as good in their own merits and were simply providing a different kind of aproach to the industry, one more casual and a little bit less brainy, but when looked up close was very strong when it comes to providing laid back entertainment that can also be engaging and make you forget that you are playing a game and not watching a Netflix original series, which in itself I consider a success.
This is why I now support games from all over the place and have in my library a good amount of both worlds. Sure one may be technically more sounding, but another may have a more realistic visual fidelity. Sometimes you get a Metal Gear and they mix both worlds, but all I know is that this back and forth is no longer a gamble for me. I set my expectations right so I know what to expect without gettting disappointed, and have the ability to appreciate the hard work both ways.
This alone open up my mind to genres I never gave a chance, particularly those that don't naturally fit on an arcade cabinet. Goldeneye was my first shooter, Super Mario 64 my first 3D platformer, and Ocarina Of Time my first adventure game. Now we have games like Uncharted and Tomb Raider that do all those 3 things at the same time and that I would never had given a chance before. As a gamer this is an ideal position to me as I can finally have the full experience and not miss on a game simply because it's too small or too large, too story driven or completely gameplay focused. It is what it is, and that is probably the biggest change I have personally experienced.

I guess I like puzzle games more than I did as a kid.

When 3d graphics became common and longer, more involved exploration based games like Tomb Raider and Ocarina of Time were being released and RPGs like FF7, there were a few years in which I was not interested in arcade-style or faster 2d action games at all. I still liked them (I spent hours upon hours in Mega Man X4 and Guardian Heroes), but I even thought about trading my Saturn and its games for a PS1 or a N64, just because they had most of these longer 3d games (3d was all the rage at the time).
Yeah, there were a couple years in which I didn't like arcade games. Obviously, I had a bad case of the stupidies.

My taste is the same as ever, it hasn't changed, it's become more lenient, less picky and more refined but it's essentially the same as it always was, only applied to so many more games, drawing clearer and more distinct guidelines to what I like exactly and what I don't. I'd get along with my younger gaming self just fine.

As a kid I used to prefer easier games and more open-ended free roam games where I could take my time and just mess around instead of having to complete a task. Nowadays I'm into more fast pace arcadey games. It's funny how my attention span actually got worse as an adult.

It's probably not the attention span, but the time: as adults we just don't have enough time to just keep messing around. Sad but true.

Through the age of 14 through 16 i'd pretty much play ANYTHING i can get my hands on, but now i can only play a specific genre of games for a prolonged period of time, and that is action games. RPGs take too long, but i still play them in the summer, racing games are the same case as RPGs, fighting games are perfect for pickup and play arcadey style. Stealth games are a no-no unless its MGS2/MGS4. Then there is stuff like Resident Evil and Yakuza which are the exception to my rules, only because i play them once a year, and sometimes, i don't play them for years. i haven't touched a Yakuza game in all of 2016 because in december of 2015 i was playing Yakuza 4 for an extended period of time, leading to a burnout from the series. I try to play Resident Evil Remake at least once a year just to keep it fresh in my mind and forget the puzzles and locations, worked twice now.

I feel like open world games are the bane of my existence nowadays. I want to experience everything, but I don't want to waste that much time just traveling around. I tend to gravitate more towards shorter games more these days.

Balder - As a kid, I remember being amazed when some magazines were saying that Ocarina of Time could have 60h of gameplay (well, if you play it really slow...). For some time, this kind of thing impressed me; nowadays, that's usually a reason to NOT buy a game. I'm seriously glad everytime someone complains that a game is too short, with "only" 2-4 hours of gameplay: those are the ones I go for nowadays. If I want a longer game, I go for the ones that take around 15h. But those 60 hours ones? Those are the exception rather than the rule; I usually play only one or two of these every year, while all the others are the shortest ones.

Only 4 hours of campaign but it's really good? Perfect.

That's because games that are long these days are filler with filler crap designed to waste your time without adding anything of value for the sake of making it artificially longer, unlike games back in the 90s that when they were long it was because they were filled with content worth your time, a game in the 90s that took 60 hours to play had 60 hours of awesome more often than not, now games that have 60+ hours of content you know it's just gonna be crap and maybe less than half an hour is actually worth playing, if you're lucky.

I kind of agree, but some games like Vanquish, which is kinda short, though its action packed from start to finish. Open world games are the worst offender, with the exception of Yakuza.

I myself don't want any long games. Maybe games with replayability, like Space Invaders Infinity Gene, but not epic journeys like Ocarina of Time.
Which is why I regret buying the Borderlands pack, because a simple quest can take up to 40 minutes to complete! It would take a LONG time for me to complete and I might get bored with it before then.
However, if you had a game like that and someone to play it with, on or offline, you'd be killing two birds with one stone: gaming and socializing. The only person I can play online with is my brother, and he's got more responsibilities than me.
