I prefer Big Tasty, but go ahead. You know what they call Big Tastys in Norway? Nope they're just called Big Tasty. You want to know what's weird though? We don't call Quarter Pounders nor Mc Royales over here even though we use the metric system.

I can't wait for Spirit Bomb to come back and see the mess he has created. Honestly I'm just surprised that no one else here had parents who forbid them from playing FPS games until they reached near-adulthood. You people are very lucky. Ironically (and stupidly), my dad let me watch ultra-violent thrillers like Total Recall, Predator 1 & 2, and Aliens, along with terrifying horror films like The Exorcist and Jeepers Creepers, when I was a kid. Apparently those are all less harmful for 8-year olds than Halo, according to my dad.

It was a loose warning and I played it when they weren't home on my modded Xbox. But that had nothing to do with shootings.

I had problems with Mortal Kombat games. I had to sell several of my own SNES games to get Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Killer Instinct. Just Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was around $150, and that is 90s money. I remember seeing it on the shelves knowing they were not going to get it for me because of the violence. To me at the time it was worth the sacrifice because my family refused to buy me those games and I had to do it under water. I even had to send my 11 years old neighbor to do the transactions for me because I was limited as a kid in that regard, and previous to that I only had access to these games through the arcades and through friends with less strict parents.

Hot damn. How old were you? And how could you spend that much money back then?

Spirit Bomb Funny, my dad was kind of the same way. He wasn't totally against M-rated games but my mom was so he played along. He still showed me movies like Total Recall , Die Hard, Commando, etc though. Thanks dad. The only time I actually owned an M-rated game before I was 14 or so was an Unreal Tournament 2004 demo. If that game wasn't so absolutely perfect I would actually feel bad about missing other M-rated games as a kid.

I like how we went from being totally derailed for 4 pages and then came on track.

First of all, if we are saying "hey, but shootings also happen in other countries!", we should put things into perspective - yes, people are killed in other countries, but, among developed countries, none is even close to the US statistics of gun related deaths. On average, the US has literally 10x more gun-related deaths than the average number of most developed countries. Here is the relevant statistic, which I got after a very quick search: www.cbsnews.com/news/how-u-s-gun-deaths-compare-to-other-countries/So there is definitely a problem there, there's no denying. Of course, it may be not a problem with gun control alone, but also a specific gun culture, as stratogustav said. To give an example, in Brazil (which is comparable in size to the US) there are laws to control guns, and yet, the death rate is twice that of the US - but that's because of the huge black market, the impossibly corrupt government and police, the excessive militarization of police forces and all the terrible social problems of an underdeveloped country. So, as scipioafricanus argued, passing laws for gun control alone doesn't solve it, that's something I can agree with (although I do think it's a very important step and I'm always in favor of it). Now, scipioafricanus , what I don't agree is with the "A gun is simply a tool" point. It's a tool, yes, but is a tool specifically created to kill as efficiently as possible - so it's not in the same category as a hammer or a knife, even if you could also use those to kill (they are meant to be used for different functions and won't work as well as a gun). That's its main purpose: I'm not saying that everyone will use it this way (swords were also created to kill, and I don't think people buy swords to go around killing people), but that is its main purpose. There's a reason why soldiers don't go to war armed with knives. You can kill with a knife or even your bare hands, but you'll hardly kill as many people before being stopped. Oh man, here I am talking about things I said I wouldn't talk about! A firearm is a tool that projects force over distance. The ironic thing about most defensive firearms (handguns in this country) is they are terribly inefficient at killing. In this country, if you are shot with a pistol, you have less than a 30% chance of dying from it. Now rifles are a different story, but the crime stats don't support their use. More people are killed with hard objects (hammers, bats, clubs), knifes and feet/hands than rifles. A lot, and I mean A LOT of people get all their firearm knowledge from the movies. Most people who get shot don't die and if they are going to, not right away. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rateUS is 108. We need to catch up. Again, Cervantes and Balder , the gun isn't the problem. A lot of those places are gun control paradises. What does it matter how people are killed? More people die in automobile accidents, but we still drive cars. And if you use statistics, if you eliminate all the crime data from gun control cities in the US (which have the highest crime rates: Detroit, Chicago, etc), the US has a lower rate than a lot of European countries. Gun Culture ground zero Plano, Texas is one of the safest cities in the US and the world (http://www.nbcnews.com/id/45791562/ns/business-forbes_com/t/plano-texas-tops-list-americas-safest-cities/#.WTCtjoWBVyg). Cervantes You have a black market supplying criminals, a corrupt government, and police force, as you say. What is more gun control going to do for you? Don't you think that you know and care more about your safety than people you don't even know? If someone is breaking into your home, intent on harming you and your family, you are going to call the police. If they show up, they will be caring guns. What makes them better than you? Do you think they are capable of caring more for you and your family than you? Shouldn't the people have the same tools the police use to protect themselves? They have firearms to protect themselves, not you. If your home is on fire, do you want a fire extinguisher? I am not going to wait for the "fire professionals" to put water on the cinders of my possessions minutes (if I am lucky) after they arrive.

There we go again. scipioafricanus now I'm confused again with the data. One place says it is 92% of all killings, and now you said we are in position 108. It is all mess up.

My mother was absolutely horrified when she learned that I had played GTA 3 over at a friend's house as a kid. I had never before heard her gasp that loudly. Honestly I don't blame her about that though. GTA is a far worse influence on kids than a PG-13 FPS game like Halo.
