For those of you who don't live in America or just don't know of it, in 1999 a pair of male high school students in Colorado brought guns to their school and went on a shooting spree, cooperatively killing around a dozen people. The case was heard around the world and sparked debate about gun control laws and, particularly, about violent video games, especially first person shooters, since the two gunmen were avid DOOM players and compared going on a school shooting to "playing a good round of DOOM" (or something very along those lines) in one of their numerous blogs/journals.
I figured I would start this thread out of curiosity of how many forumgoers here had their hobby affected in some way by this incident? I was just passed my toddler years when I heard about this tragedy on the radio the day it happened. Before then, my folks would frequently rent Goldeneye 007 for me and my brother, and even Quake on several occasions. But from then on my parents didn't let us anywhere near FPS games until we were well into our teens, which sucked balls because it meant that I missed out on some amazing 6th gen shooters like Halo CE and, coincidentally, Goldeneye Rogue Agent, which I would've loved to have played with my friends. My pop in particular had a seething hatred for these types of games, and gaming in general. He was one of those old-timer types of people who thought games were responsible for all the problems plaguing the younger generation, although he didn't really act this way until the Columbine incident.
SO, how did the Columbine Shooting affect your gaming routine, if it even did at all? And what about gun control laws? What's you opinion on that?
Discuss.

Violent video games aren't the reason for school shootings. Bad gun culture is.

If you've seen Bowling for Columbine, you would've heard of them for sure. BTW Michael Moore's stuff is a mix of FACT and FICTION. Those can be the best lies.
These two kids were messed up, which isn't exactly unusual at their age. So desperate to be accepted, yet so ready to rip each other apart. DOOM didn't spur them on, but you can bet it sure didn't help a lot either (nor would any otehr violent video game)! If they didn't have access to guns, they would've gone with something else, like power tools, knives, molotov cocktails...
Kids are impressionable. Even adults are impressionable, but not as much as teens and kids. Any responsible adult wouldn't get my kids any violent games until they were old enough, yet we got so many kids on MA15+ rated games Call of Duty or GTA Online (not that I play nay of those, but I've met people who have). Some parents don't know or don't care when they should know better.
Maybe it's not so much the 'gun culture', but a light and lax attitude towards the responsibility of having a gun. And sometimes, you might see it in the movies, like where the hero just goes 'bang bang'.
Still, sometimes, when I play a game with heavy blood and gore, I sometimes ask myself: is this really healthy? Should I really play this?

Still, sometimes, when I play a game with heavy blood and gore, I sometimes ask myself: is this really healthy? Should I really play this? No, it's about gun culture. People don't go around with power tools and Molotov cocktails in other countries at school as often as in America. Are people more fucked up there? No I don't think so. It's about the easy access and pride in having guns. People say it's unavoidable, but ironically it only happens that much in countries with easy access to guns.

Balder, This topic is about shooting games and their relationship to the Columbine Shooting. If you want to discuss gun culture in America (something you obviously understand very little), make a new thread in the non-gaming section. Please stay on topic from here on forward. Thank you. - The Moderator

Thank you. - Not a Moderator First of this is related. School shootings are related to gun culture, especially when people blame it on video games. It's an argument against the blame of video games. You being a moderator is getting old. Especially since this isn't even your "moderator section".

BACK ON TOPICI remember Columbine. I also remember the killings being blamed on a lot of things. Violent games, movies, music. All things that I'm sure everyone posting here enjoys, and which has driven none of us to murder. I love DooM, and the Matrix, and heavy metal... But I don't kill people. It's interesting to hear how it affected your childhood, though, Spirit Bomb .

I remember picking up DOOM after I heard that the Columbine shooters were fans of it.

People have blamed music, movies and video games each in their era. What's next? Place your bets here.
