The difference is that they are actually to blame.

Welp, I tried to save this thread! But I guess someone's on a mission. Go on then, Balder. Lecture us all on American gun culture. I'm sure this will go over well.

I don't really know if this has anything to do with this incident in particular, but I dislike how light guns in general whether is for the arcades or for home use have to be gay colored and looking like some kind of toy for kids under five. This is why a VR Farpoint gun looks like this: There is no much we can do about it. I also think this also has helped the practice of people to play shooters with a pad instead of light gun. When naturally, shooters are best suited for light guns, which is something I discovered after trying Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 on the PS3 with the Move controllers, and that anyone can experience for themselves by playing something like Resisdent Evil 4 on the Wii for example. I believe this also may be why rail shooters in general that require light guns such as The House Of The Dead, Virtua Cop, and Time Crisis, are nowhere to be sèen in consoles for the most part. Again, I don't know if this is strictly related to Columbine, but it is quite annoying nevertheless.

Legislation was soon passed almost worldwide to force manufacturers to make toy guns and peripherals look as colorful and unrealistic as possible. The NES zapper, which was already made to look as much like a toy as possible, was changed to bright orange. In Japan, the light gun for the Famicom closely resembles a real revolver. Soon after the Night Trap US scandal even the brightly colored Justifier light guns were coming under fire (pun intended? I'll let you make the call) (side note: the Sega Mark III does not have a light gun peripheral. It was only for the Western Master System )

The Zapper was definitely a sign something was already going on early on. Instead, with Night Trap and all, actual vibrators in the shape of dildos are totally fine in black colors for some reason.

I'm not saying the Kinect is any good either. Honestly those technologies are great. Sadly the software developers behind them do very little effort in making them worthwhile. Add to that the stupidity of gamers that claim they don't like motion games because of their lack of human friends. It all adds up for an epic fail. I wish I could play Sports Champions 2 on my PS4 or better yet on my VR unit, but because people are these jackasses that talk shit out of their ass and ruin everything now developers are hesitant to release anything because they are afraid of the backslash of haters and online trolls.

The Kinect is less than great. I've used it for a while and it's unresponsive to voice commands.

The Kinect is less than great. I've used it for a while and it's unresponsive to voice commands. That's what I mean. There is no effort behind those technologies. Microsoft devs are either incapable or they did not put enough effort into making it worthwile. It doesn't matter how good an idea for a media tech can be. If the software is unreliable there is no point.

What sucked is that the media constructed a narrative in which the killers were introverted, gamers, fans of metal music and goth culture that were bullied by classmates that no one would guess were able to commit any crime - when, in reality, they were outspoken, had already been caught by the police, were reportedly bullies and had f****** hunting as a hobbie. (Why the hell the media gave attention to their virtual guns when they were familiarized with very real, actual guns all the time?)
So, what was the fallout ater the shooting? Introverted, bullied kids who always needed help were even more persecuted, now by the institutions themselves.
There was an impact even internationally, although certainly not close to be as bad as in the US. Even here in Brazil, goth kids and gamers were briefly seen as suspicious by adults - although what was always bad to our kids was our deeply christian-fundamentalist culture that threats everything fun as satanic influence. Columbine made it a bit worse, albeit for only a few months.
EDIT: I won't get into gun culture discussion, but let me just state my opinion is probably close to Balder's - while "guns don't shoot themselves" etc., if those kids didn't have access to guns they would certainly not do so many killings and wounds in so little time. But yeah, we should focus on the consequences it did on gaming culture instead of talking about gun control and politics.
