A new update with a lot of details: It's going to have a custom AMD processor with Radeon graphics. and run Linux! That means you can play other stuff you've already bought that can run on Linux. The price point is going to be 250-300 USD depending on what version. It's going on IndieGoGO this Fall and there's going to be a wood grain version with actual wood. There will be tons of classic Atari retro games pre-loaded. It'll ship out in Spring of 2018. The new games will be announced later.
My toughts:
- Pricing ain't too bad, but I need to see some games.
- I've never used Linux before, so I don't know what that will be like.
- It kinda sounds like the Steam Machine, but more streamlined.
- The actual wood wood grain sounds awesome.
- The release date is fine.
- Pre-built-in games sound great.

I hope the built in games are the arcade versions. Other than that, I wonder what kinds of games this thing will play. This is PS4-level pricing. Will it be able to compete, or are we basically paying for the novelty of a new Atari system? I still want one either way, mind you.

This might be my portal into PC gaming, the few ones I've missed like Undertale.

I found this article online. It isn't particularly well written (how many times can they repeat literally the exact same thing?), but I got the more interesting stuff right here: The new box will have an AMD custom processor with Radeon graphics. It will run the Linux operating system, with a user interface it’s customizing for TVs. Mac said that the machine will run PC games, but it will also be capable of doing streaming, running apps, browsing the web, and playing music. As far as games go, the machine will run the kind of games that a mid-range PC can do today, but it won’t run Triple-A games that require high-end PC performance. Mac said Indiegogo will be able to offer stronger international support for crowdfunding as well as hardware support. As a Linux-based open system, the Ataribox will also promote freedom for users to run what they want. Users will have free access to the underlying OS to customize as they wish.“People are used to the flexibility of a PC, but most connected TV devices have closed systems and content stores,” he said. “We wanted to create a killer TV product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible, including accessing pre-owned games from other content providers.”

Wow. The internet really was triggered about the latest update today. I'm rather leery, but it sure is popular to drink your hater-aide and bash the latest news. I'll withhold my anger until the next update comes around.

It has a pretty bad reputation when it comes to consoles.

So this could be another Sigma? It better not be. If it is, modern Atari has failed me for the last time.

So it's pretty much a mid-range PC with Linux, the cool looking Atari appearance (the prototype looks nice) and with Atari games pre-loaded.
I'm ok with that. As I thought before, this is turning out to be what the "Steam Machine" was supposed to: a standardized pc. They've also mentioned it will come with new games alongside the classic ones, so let's see how that will turn out.

There were Steam Machines where you could customize everything. At that point, why wouldn't you just buy a computer?

Balder - Yeah, that's my problem with the entire thing: the Steam Machine was to be an easy way to buy a gaming computer and to give developers a "target performance" for their games. But then Valve forgot to standardize anything, so, in the end, it was just a bunch of wildly different PCs with Steam OS installed on them. It didn't make anything easier.

If anything they made the PC market even worse with making the PC market have another OS to choose between.
