I played Until Dawn with some close friends this last Saturday night. On paper it is everything I should dislike in a game. However it is one of the best games I have played on my PS4.
I love everything about it, but I have to mention how I particularly love the way the interaction with the game is done using the DualShock 4 capabilities to their full potential. It is simply outstanding, and very rewarding.
From using a lever, to pulling a latch, to remaining still, to flipping an object, to passing a notebook page, to aiming a shotgun blast, it is simply very satisfying.
We finished the game and now it is very dissapointed to realize we don't have more games like this. It is a miss opportunity as all those things make the game experience so much more immersive, particularly for this particular genre.
The closest thing I have come across is Heavy Rain and likely Beyond Two Souls (the remixed version), but I feel Until Dawn is an overall better package. Heavy Rain may have the better story, for sure, but it is missing a little touch on the kind of interactive experience that makes Until Dawn so special.
I just want to give my props to Supermassive Games. These guys are true professionals in what they do. Surprisingly they are from the West. I guess it is one of those rare cases like with Housemarque that end up being very good despite their geographic location.
We played between six people, and no one left from start to finish. I even went back on my own just to see some scenes I wanted to see. We stayed up all the way to over 3 in the morning. That alone shows how good this game is.
By the way, I didn't get it through PS Plus, I bought it long time ago, I was just simply putting it behind, and it was a coincidence that I finally played it this month.
I'm glad more people will have access to it now that it is in PS Plus because it is a very neat thing to play I highly recommend to everyone.
It looks like it has an extremely easy Platinum trophy as well, which is another good thing. I'll probably go back and get it myself. I really hope this is not just an one time thing, and we get more titles like this one in the future from developers.

That stuff can be neat, but I wouldn't want it in every game. Let it shine in some rather than become gimmicky shovelware.

A lot of big budget games would benefit from these things. It really enhances the experience. I find it perfect for every single game in that genre. Like I said, on paper these games are everything I should not like. They are almost interactive movies and are full of cutscenes. You know, the kind of stuff that has stopped me to finish the Metal Gear saga. But the gameplay on Until Dawn adds extra deph to the experience. It is basically QTE, but QTE done right. You don't want to move the controller because you don't want to be hear, you get an adrenaline rush trying to shoot on target with the controller before your time runs out, and if you fail there are consequences to the whole story. You can't replace that. It is simply much more of an immersive feel than just pressing a button. You get that too, but the clever use of the controller adds that necessary balance. I appreciate even little things like flipping a page with the touchpad or moving your controller to look behind an object you just picked up. It is not as immersive as VR, but it does add to the immersion without having to compromise playing with your friends without knowing what's going around you.

Yeah. If every game started doing that, I'd stop playing, tbh.

Yeah. If every game started doing that, I'd stop playing, tbh. No one said that about every game. This is a very specific genre. I don't even think the genre has a name. Does it? I mean like Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, etc.. Where if you fail there are story consequences and such. It is not a graphic novel because I can see differences there.

I thought you meant all horror games. Ok. Continue.

Oooohh. I thought you meant all horror games. Ok. Continue. Well, if you are talking about horror themes specifically, many of those could definitely benefit from these controls. In a way The House Of The Dead already does it. Except that one is a straight up shooter on rails.

The way it should be.

You don't swipe through pages in HotD. And if you do, it's by shooting the book. The way it should be. What's the point there. What does that had to do with anything I said? We were talking about Heavy Rain / Beyond Two Soul type of games. The House Of The Dead is a shooter on rails so of course there is no such thing as flipping pages. It's like you went back to your theory that I said all horror games should be like Until Dawn. I never said that. I even mentioned horror themed games come in different genres. There are elements there that could benefit horror games in general, but obviously only the elements that apply to the whatever specific genre the game in question belongs to. The House Of The Dead is perfect as it is. But I can see some of these things elements being great for a new Clock Tower, Fatal Frame or a new Silent Hill for example if they make sense for whatever genre they decide to make those games. Maybe you got confused when I said I want more games like Until Dawn. That doesn't mean I want games that already exists to be like Until Dawn that are not even part of that genre. Again there should be a name for this soap opera decision making games. Otherwise it is just confusing. For example Until Dawn Rush Of Blood on PS VR is a straight up shooter on rails like The House Of The Dead and I love it as it is. I played through Resident Evil VII which is great, but that game could had benefit from these controls despite being a different genre. So it is definitely something case by case. But again, I wasn't taking about those games. I was talking about new games in the Until Dawn genre. I don't want Resident Evil VII to be like Until Dawn, but the controls yes I do. It would had enhanced the experience. Specially on VR. Makes sense?

Ah, you reminded me to get it for free this month on PS Plus (together with Game of Thrones)That goes for everyone else on PS Plus too! (looking @you teddykongcountry ) Don't forget to get it while it's free ! Just about a week left ! I had actually written the game off as some teenage wannabe scary movie with QTEs, but associating it with Quantic's Heavy Rain & Beyond gives me a bit of a change in perspective - I'm more inclined to give it a chance now... As much as I dislike Hayden Panettiere... I'll DL it tonight or so then give it a go and tell you what I think about it (before too long... )

OK, I hope you mean only with RE7. Because otherwise I would think you still think I mean with all horror games, and that's not what I said. Although in all honestly all shooters should have the option to play with a lightgun in my opinion. The DS4 already has that function built in. It is a waste no more games use it. It should be in the same way of how standard inverted controls are. Most games would give you the option to change between regual controls to inverted. If they add lightgun controls, all these boring ass shooters will be cool all of the sudden. I get it, it would be expensive and not everyone likes to point, but pointing makes these games more playable. I played through the whole Killzone Shadow Fall and it was a legit pain in the ass not having the option to manually point. In the case of RE7 have you even played it on VR? If you do and you are not like one of those people that get sick you would understand how much better RE7 would be with these controls. RE7 is already one of the best in the genre, so adding that would simply make it more badass.

Surprisingly they are from the West. I guess it is one of those rare cases like with Housemarque that end up being very good despite their geographic location That's just an ignorant way to assume a game or a developer's quality.

It is obviously a joke for the forum. Many of my favorite games have been made by Western developers like the Mortal Kombat series, Sports Champions 2, Zen Pinball 2, Star wars Rogue Squadron, James Bond 007 GoldenEye, Killer Instinct, etc.. Not to mention newer stuff like Codemasters racers, Asseto Corsa, Project Cars, VR stuff, PS Move stuff, the list goes on.
