I plan on buying a new monitor for my computer. I noticed there aren't many new 4:3 ratio monitors on the market. This is my preferred aspect ratio because I mostly play older games, and so I ask:
Can 16:9 monitors play games in 4:3?
Bonus question for those who are interested: are there any import factors to take into consideration when scoping out gaming monitors (ex. refresh rate, response time, etc.)? I know next to nothing about this stuff....

You can play in 4:3 but it will have black pillars on the sides. Also, there's a difference between TN and IPS monitors. TN usually has higher refresh rate and lower input lag, however it definitely has worse colors and picture quality. I prefer IPS as they have great picture quality, and you can find one that has low input lag. I have an Eizo monitor that is an IPS monitor made for gaming.

Cool, I support your choice in getting an IPS over a TN.

Cool, I support your choice in getting an IPS over a TN. There's one thing that's concerning me, though. On that monitor's description it said the monitor's response time is "5ms GTG". What does "GTG" stand for/mean? Do you (or anyone here) know? I'm worried because I was hoping it would have a response time that would match that of many of the TN monitors I was seeing, and while it did, I don't understand what that acronym "GTG" means and none of the TN monitors had it on their response time. Response time (AKA input lag) is what I care about most.

But may I ask where you got all this information? Probably an American website.

You shouldn't worry with input lag, monitors have no problem with it - it's a problem only in tvs and only the bigger ones (at least over 40", I guess), and even then most of them have a pc or gaming mode that reduces or give you no lag.

The input lag doesn't get reduced that much.

Interesting. But a projector should be unaffected, right?

Interesting. But a projector should be unaffected, right? The other way around: projectors tend to have much higher lag, though there are some exceptions. Balder - I've read about a lot of tvs above 40" with no perceptible lag (even some +50") - but, if I'm not mistaken, they must be LED tvs, plasma ones have higher lag. But I haven't read about this in a long time, so I don't know which tvs nowadays are the better ones when it comes to lag.

Well it depends on the specific TV I guess, but my 2012 LG 47" is unplayable in any mode for a lot of games, even non-FPSs.
