Or should I buy a 3DS instead?

I say the 3DS has many more worthwhile games and, well, is truly portable - also, some Wii U games are getting ported to the Switch. The Wii U still has a few good exclusives that weren't ported, though: Bayonetta 2 and Wonderfull 101 come to mind, though I don't see Bayonetta 2 remaining an exclusive for too long (Bayo 2 will probably appear on the Switch). Platinum has rereleased the first one on PC this year, so it shows they have interest in keeping the series available to new systems.
I also chose the 3DS over the Wii U because the retrocompatibility with the DS seemed to me more attractive than with the Wii. I am playing Chrono Trigger DS right now and having a blast.

I prefer consoles over handhelds. The Wii U versions of those games are superior anyway. The good thing about the Wii U is that it has a good 40 awesome titles and you are done. Unlike other platforms where you have to dig in through hundreds of titles to find the goodies.

BTW anyone here actually own one? I have the New 3DS XL, Wii, Wii U, and a Nintendo Switch, I just don't have a Vita.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love my Wii U. Mario 3D World is a lot of fun to play. Xenoblade Chronicles X will destroy your regular life. I put 350 hours of my life into that game. The Zelda remakes are awesome. Breath of the Wild plays excellently on the system, because it was developed for it. Bayonetta 2 is excellent, if you're into that type of game. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. are solid games. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is strangely fun. I was surprised that it was as addicting as it was. Yoshi's Whooly World is cutsy wootsy, but it is a great game. The Batman: Arkham Assylum on the Wii U is the definitive edition, and I enjoyed the hell out of that one. Pikmin 3 is excellent as well. There are other good games as well, but (obviously) the 3rd party support isn't there.
Why are you so interested? Are you getting one?

I think the Wii U faced the problem that affected the entire last generation, in that every console (Wii U, PS4, X1) felt like a beta version to the "true" ones (Switch, Pro, 1X). It's like that entire generation was created to buy time for the current consoles.

dschult3 It's a toss-up between WiiU, 3DS or PS Vita. Do you think prices for the WiiU games are set to come down? The PS Vita is sure taking its sweet time doing that...

Nintendo pulled all of its stock after Christmas, so the systems are holding their value. The 3rd party games are dirt cheap, but the 1st party games are either holding their value or going up. Try getting Bayonetta 2 with the remake of the first one. Damn scalpers.

Yoshi's Wooly World is the only one I can think of (personally speaking). I would never recommend buying a console for one game though, so that's why I never bought one.

The answer depends on how many games from the WiiU get brought over to the Switch, I guess. The Switch already has Mario Kart 8, Zelda BotW, Splatoon, and Pokken Tournament. If it gets games like Mario Maker and Smash Bros (and even Bayonetta and Treasure Tracker Toad) next yearish, then I wouldn't see much point in the WiiU, myself. Especially with prices as they are.

I love the party games like Wii Sports Club, Game & Wario, Wii Party U, and even Mario Party 10 if you play with other people. But the best one is Nintendo Land IMO. Also both Mario & Sonic Olympic games are super fun.

Yeah, if they port everything over, then it really isn't worth it. Although, I do love the HDMI output for Wii games. That is a definite bonus. Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Super Mario Galaxy look amazing in HD.
