I think the problem is that, once you get depressed, you probably don't have the will or strenght to do those things that supposedly could make you feel better (like socializing or having healthy habits), so it's a self-defeating cycle. That's why outside help is of such importance. In Derek's case, at least we know he is getting psychological help, that's important.

I would suggest though that discussing his psychological condition here along with armchair diagnosis/treatment suggestions is a bit tasteless. Never hurts to send some support but I'm going to avoid commenting further.

There is depression caused by chemical imbalance and just bad luck. This seems like the later. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Greens and exercise. Also avoid all processed meats and drink pure water. Stay away from oils other than olive. If you don't eat enough kale or spinach at least get some multi vitamins. Get fish oil. Get 8 hours of sleep a day. Keep your space clean and organized, get rid of all the clutter, shower, and start writing some personal goals for short and long term. That would solve depression for anybody. I used to think so, too, but depression goes a lot deeper than a man's health habits alone. He’s right. I never felt better about life when I was working out nearly daily. Exercise does a lot for self esteem and, at least for me, lifting weights was an excellent way to blow off frustrations. It’s a cure all, but a fitness routine does wonders for your body and your mind. |
